Compaq M700 Armada very dark screen

I've got a Compaq Armada M700 Laptop running w2k and 98se in dual boot

The screen has suddenly gone very dark to the point of barely being able to see the desktop right from initial boot in either os however the tv out works fine

I've tried the Fn+F10 keys to set brightness with no luck, any thoughts would be appreciated

Most probably a knackered backlight. More usually, the inverter circuitry which powers the backlight has failed. If you're good with electronics, take the screen apart and find the inverter circuit board alongside/below the LCD panel - there's often a surface mount fuse on that circuit board - test and replace.

Before you do this, do the simple check of cables and sockets making sure they're all plugged in right and nothing's broken - esp check the cables that pass through the hinges.

If it's a year or so old,might be worth speaking to Compaq first though.
