  • Via, SMP, SBLive and 1GB RAM...what could possibly go wrong?

Title says it all I have a mate who plans to get a dual Intel system, and I've showed him the offer from Scan: http://www.scan.co.uk/today.htm

It's a Gigabyte 6VX-DC7, and comes with 2 x 1GHz (133) P3s, for just under £400. He is currently using a Compaq P2, with an SBLive Platinum, and the main usage will be the creation of music.

The board comes with 4 slots, but we've not checked out how much RAM it supports yet. However, while I was doing that, I thought I'd ask opinions about this idea...is VIA+SBLive a good idea? Obviously a fully working dual 1GHz will be nice...but I hate VIA problems, and SBLive's seem to attract this...

If you think VIA is ok, what about Gigabyte? What board do you use in your dual P3 700s@933 MURCers?

    Thanking the MURC once again

    P.

VIA + sblive? Sure, no problem with the latest patches from VIA.

    SMP + sblive? AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

I have a friend that has the exact same setup, infact I put the system together. The differences are that he has 768MB RAM a ABIT board and a SB LIVE PLAYER 5.1.

              It actually works flawlessly.

Maybe it's my magic touch, who knows???

OK...then I'll keep the SBLive! for now and hope all goes well when I get the Dual Athlons in a couple of months.

OK lets see if I remember...

                    Abit VP6 with RAID
                    2xPentium3 1GHz
Hercules 3d Prophet2 MX (Aaargh!!!, he didn't listen to me)
                    3x256 MB PC133
Soundblaster Live Player 5.1 (the same chip that's on the Platinum)
                    Intel 10/100 NIC

                    Things that doesn't matter
                    NEC FE950 19"
                    Pioneer 16/40 DVD
                    2x30 GB DTLA IBM
Hewlett Packard Cd writer (do not remember the speed)
                    Chiftec Dragon Case, bla, bla

Well that's it. As you can figure out, he is running W2K and spends most of his time in Photoshop.

He has been running that setup in 5 months without a glitch.

                    My magic touch.
