Anyone have any info? (TNT2 Vanta)

I got a 16MB TNT2 Vanta Given to me by a friend who just bought an all in wonder 128.

I know it sucks... but it should work better than the I815 Onboard Video. (So far it isn't the case)

I installed it and the problem I am having is banding on a light colored background when there is dark colored text or lines (Such as the horizontal lines of a window)

I have flashed to three different revisions on the Bios and also played around with the refresh rates of the monitor.

I called the person who gave it to me and they said that it has done that for as long as they have had the card.

Would it be a hardware problem?

If so ... anyone know more about the rendering of output that could shed some insight into the problem.

I took out the screenshot because the banding doesn't appear with a screen capture. (It still shows up viewing the screenie on the computer with the Vanta but on the one with the Old ATI it doesn't show up.)

Found out the problem...

It turns out that he decided to change the Heatsink and fan himself and he didn't attach it properly (Or even touching the HS)

He lied about it doing it since he purchased it... but rather it was after he pulled this stunt that it started to screw up...

I think this chip got a little toasty and didn't like the extra heat.

Maybe good cooling could make it more sensible.

(I don't think so though... its probably on its way to that BBQ in the Sky.)

Thats ok... now I get to look for another video card.

Talk about a crappy card. Yuk. But as you said, better than onboard video (I guess)

I don't know... I think that the onboard video without the horizontal banding is much much easier on the eyes... and the speed increase isn't that noticable without an FPS counter.

My g400 MAX has done that since the day I got it. Noone has ever been able to tell me what the problem was so I just let it be. It isn't that bad, it just bugs if you are looking for it.

Heh Heh... I am guessing you don't realize how severe this banding is...

Take a sheet of white paper and a pencil.

write a few words down the side of the page.

Then draw a box under it.

Then take your pencil and depending on how many letters are in the word... shade a straight line across the page the height of the tallest letter with the longest word being the darkest and the shortest being the lightest.. but still noticeable.

For the box... shade a line across the 2 horizantal sides.

(Now picture your screen like this for everything.... its really really noticable... )
