The last prcessor I bought was a boxed slot-1 PIII 550. I've just received a couple of them new-fangled 1GHz FCPGA things which don't have the heatsinks and fans attached.

Has anyone got any advice on the best way for a hamfisted person to attach these properly without breaking something?

    TIA

Use a hammer, and just pound it onto the CPU. Seriously, the way I put them on is: After spreading a thin layer of heatsink grease over the die of the CPU I carefully hook one side of the retaining clip onto the side of the socket that's got the least clearance. Then I carefully sit the heatsink onto the CPU, making sure I don't twist, shift, or move it any more than possible. Then while holding the sink steady with one hand I use either a finger, or a small screwdriver if the clip is a tight one, and push the free end of the clip down over the remaining "peg" on the socket.
