  • Interesting reading: why 704 wide captures on some cards & not 720 wide?

    Just in case anyone thought 704 wide captures made no sense in a world of MPEG-2 and DV using 720 wide, here's some reading for you on the subject;

    I know that many drivers and hardware require an image width that's a multiple of 32.

    I quite like a resolution of 704, it scales very nicely 2:1 to VCD resolution. Integer scaling factors avoid a lot of rounding errors.
    A width of 720, on the other hand, scales better to SVCD resolution (3:2). Whenever I make SVCDS from Matrox captures, I first add 8 pixels left and right before scaling down to 480x576.
    Resistance is futile - Microborg will assimilate you.

      I prefer 720x480 as it matches the NTSC DVD format.

      For VCD I just crop off 8 pixels form the left and right edges in TMPGenc and then the resizing is 2:1.
