Next-gen Matrox chip to launch 19 June
By: Tony Smith
Posted: 09/05/2001 at 11:42 GMT

Matrox is set to unveil its next-generation 3D graphics acceleration chip next week in preparation for the part's official launch on 19 June.

The company, of course, isn't saying which chip it will be unveiling next week, but the G550 - the follow-up to the current G450 - has to be most likely candidate.

Matrox's next major part was to have been the G800, which was said to offer twin rendering pipelines, support 128-bit DDR SDRAM video memory and feature a built-in transform and lighting engine as per Nvidia and ATI.

However, according to a Matrox representative, cited by The Tech Report last month, the G800 is "completely dead".

The trouble appears to have been that G800 was a dual-chip solution and, like 3dfx's problematic multi-chip VSA-100, Matrox may have run into difficulty making the chip pay. Two chips per board hits costs hard, especially when the silicon yields are low, as they always are in the early days of a new chip.

Instead, Matrox is thought to be working on a single-chip version, the G550. It is said to offer the same 128-bit DDR support and dual rendering pipeline with three texture units per pipeline, but cuts back the T&L engine to provide just one or two commonly used features. There's matrix skinning and displacement mapping.

The G550 is expected to have a 200-250MHz clock and a 360MHz RAMDAC. The part will be fabbed at 0.18 micron and support AGP 1x, 2x and 4x. The Millennium G550 board will contain 32MB of DDR SDRAM.

According to the Matrox guy, the G550 will ship by the end of May, "at the latest". Which broadly coincides with the end of the non-disclosure agreement Matrox is expecting attendees of next week's launch to sign. The chip will almost certainly appear under Matrox's Millennium brand and boards are expected to cost between $150 and $200.

One thing I don't get though, is if it's launched on June 19th, how will it be shipping by end of May? http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/confused.gif

Maybe it's going to ship early so it will actually be available at the launch. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

"Which broadly coincides with the end of the non-disclosure agreement Matrox is expecting attendees of next week's launch to sign." has been snipped as well http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

Good catch Steve!!

Although "The company, of course, isn't saying which chip it will be unveiling, but the G550 - the follow-up to the current G450 - has to be most likely candidate" is the funniest thing. I'll bet on something between a G475 and a G675, with the always possible outside of it being the Rising Eagle http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/biggrin.gif

lol.. don't hold your breath

And as eluded to, 'announced' doesn't mean 'available' to end-users.

I still say it's going to be the Condor II chip... can't post the picture again because tripod shut down my account - there you see how far matrox's power reaches, and this is evidence that the pic was valid, matrox were obviously scared of their secrets being unveiled, and had tripod shut down my account http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

I have almost given up and moved to the company with the ugly red icons (god, I'd hate having one of those somewhere on my desktop or in my display properties http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif), but now that vulture central reiterates our own rumours, my faith that I'll hold a new matrox card in my hands is almost restored - the price sounds good, too http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

9th May 2001, 12:21
Sure hope it's true http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

The Hercules Kyro II just made its way here.
I wanted to change my video card in a couple of weeks. Was thinking at a 32 DDR Radeon or the 3D Prophet 4500.
A G550 sounds better though http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

9th May 2001, 13:45
I heard Kyro II has no win2K driver support.
Plus from the reviews I read the drivers aren't all that great.

9th May 2001, 15:10
So, whats new about this?

Its just a rewrite of the tech-review article from april 20, with some added speculation on a certain date.

9th May 2001, 15:26

Until Matrox makes an official announcement I would take everything you see on the net with a grain of salt.

10th May 2001, 06:10
The drivers aren't really pre-release, the Kyro 2 is just a clocked-up Kyro 1, which has been on the marked for over a year, the drivers had better be good by now.

10th May 2001, 07:25
CHAAS: The Kyro II is basically just a clocked-up Kyro, yet it has more transistors, and I doubt they're all just for higher clockspeeds. So I think the new drivers are not the same than the old ones, you're right though that the code base will likely be the same. I tink they work with all games now, though, including MBTR.

Kyro II has the BEST win2k drivers of ALL gaming cards. They're always at least as fast as the Win9x ones and sometimes even faster. Tom doesn't know sh*t http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

And their drivers are quite good. All that were reviewed were pre-release drivers and they were WAY better than for example nVidia's.

Drivers are no issue with the Kyro II.

The issue is, neither the card nor the manufacturer contain an M http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

its funny how the keep denying the g800 ever existed and say that the project is completely dead all at the same time
those news made it to www.chip.de (http://www.chip.de)

Havent we herd that MAtrox will release a new chip in a cople of weaks for a long time now?

When you want something you don't have the money and now that I managed to get 150$ I don't know what to spend them on.

Kyro II ? Radeon ? New case plus new CDROM and some other stuff ?
A pair of skates (Rollerblade Swindler) ?
Wait for Matrox's next card ?

I know this is the Crystal Ball forum, but I still have to stress something: Nothing is official until you hear it from the real source, being Matrox.

So quit saying it might be or is official. Until you've seen confirmation on www.matrox.com (http://www.matrox.com) everything is still a hoax !!

Are you sure... I heard that Matrox was merging with Mercedes Benz and Mitsubishi... they were going to be 3Monacom

I checked out the Mercedes Home Page and they had a very short brief on there... It said "Matrox and Mercedes use Mitsubishi Plant to produce New High Speed Convertible Processor Chip with Continental Kit and Hardtop cooling fan... 17Amps to the Gallon and 3 Quarts of TMU Grease...

This thing even has leather Ram Covers. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/eek.gif

Sounds expensive...

I want one!!!!!

Ali</font>O.T., but that's seems to be o.k. for this forum http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/biggrin.gif ... I don't think they've ever been sold in the States. I've never seen one and I've been tracking Mercedes since I bought my first one about 15 years ago. I checked the Mercedes National site and Kiwi site and didn't see any mention of a G series; are they producing them now? Where? I couldn't find the article again that mentioned the new G but perhaps its a new reworked vehicle or one targeted at the U.S. market.

the MB G series off-roaders are well known in Europe and quite common in Sweden. These are heavy-duty offroad vehicles and they come with either diesel- or ottomotors. There are even cusomized AMG versions with highpowerded V8 engines and all thinkable extravaganza, for those who want to park their car outside the Monte Carlo casino.

Contrary to most of their competitors they have full differential locks on both axles and a really low 1st gear for added maneuverability in heavy terrain.

They are actually built by Steyer in Austria, as far as I know, and are still in production.
Early versions were very noisy on-road, and not very comfortable with their heavy stiff axles.

A dodgy translation
The Canadian manufacturer of 3D-Grafikkarten with own chip-development will introduce to first reports according to in the course of this year his/its next chart-chip with the code-name " G550 ". After Matrox brought out in the last year with the G450 only a production-optimized version of the G400 from the year 1999, it becomes highest time for a new product. In order to be competitively, the new will hardly make do 3D-Chip without functions of DirectX8. It is however unlikely that Matrox competes with Nvidias GeForce 3 approximately and implements the Windows-chart-interface completely. For the company held in the private property, such a project should be too costly especially since Matrox primarily has the Businessmarkt in the eye, for the many DirectX - 8 -functions secondary is. After reports of The registers and the Tech - report should decree the G550 over two Renderpipelineses with in each case three texture-units and is driven with a bar-speed of 200 to 250 MHzes. Somewhat more concretely, boss-developer expressed himself/itself Dan Wood in a lecture in July of last year.
Therefore, the G550 probably becomes function-being-ness (Vertex Shader), for which so named " matrix contains palette Skinning ", with which one " can shape organically round " transitions between arm and shoulder and the facial expression of speakers realistically approximately. Also " Perturbation Mapping " for surface-structures was a topic of these presentations.

They quote the register and tech reports

IMOP The MB G series suck big time. They suffer from frequent mechanical problems and are not reliable at all. Furthermore u may get permanent hearing damage from the excessive noise from the engine.
A certain model is being sold as a military vehicle by steyr. I am not sure which one though. Nothing like the hammer though.

Just to clarify things I am refering to the ones manufactured by Steyr.

15th May 2001, 10:42
Thanks for the MB feedback (got something useful out of this thread http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/biggrin.gif)! I don't have any need for off-roading but we have been enjoying our MB 4WD wagon, 300TE 4Matic, for the last 10+ years, The wagon is perfect for a California car that goes up to the mountains for an occasional ski trip. I just was amused to see yet another company making a G series, a name most of us has grown to admire.
