For once, let's not crash the old thread before firing up a new one, all right?

To kick off: here's a little gem I found in my mailbox:

From: david nadelson <email address snipped to protect the guilty>
Subject: Seti@Home teams

Noticed your Seti group for Matrox users. I'm part of another group, "Knights
Who Say Ni!," that's much more fun, with a theme that's more interesting than
a corporate advertisement. Consider merging your group with ours - we are
16th overall (over 290,000) and have the highest work unit per day average of
anybody (over 2500 and growing every day). Check out these sites, and think
about presenting this offer to your team members!

Our group's home page: www.knsw.net/seti (http://www.knsw.net/seti)
Our status page: http://www2.4dcomm.com/lizard/seti/stats

"KWSN - Sir Also Not Appearing In This Film"

I told him I'd post his message to the forums, so there.
For the record, here's what I replied:

David,

> Noticed your Seti group for Matrox users.

Sorry, it's not my group. SteveC is the founder of the Matrox Users group.

> I'm part of another group, "Knights Who Say Ni!," that's much more fun,

I somehow doubt that, but I'm sure you've done some thorough investigation
to arrive to that conclusion.

> with a theme that's more interesting than a corporate advertisement.

Eeew, my gawd! Even more interesting? Well, I guess if you say so...
It's more like a loosely coupled bunch of nerds than a corporate adver-
tisement though, but perhaps the distinction is irrelevant for someone
from such a fun group.

> Consider merging your group with ours - we are
> 16th overall (over 290,000) and have the highest work unit per day average of
> anybody (over 2500 and growing every day).

Let me state at this point that I admire the way KWSN has been slicing
through the ranks lately. And in fact, it *does* seem like a fun group.
Let's just say I don't like the style of this particular e-mail.

It's great that you're enthousiatic about your group. However, twisting
that into petty insults towards other groups scores amazingly high on
my annoy-o-meter.

> Check out these sites,

I did. There's a typo.

> and think about presenting this offer to your team members!

I'll post this one to the message boards, and let them decide for
themselves. Okay?

> Our group's home page: www.knsw.net/seti (http://www.knsw.net/seti)
> Our status page: http://www2.4dcomm.com/lizard/seti/stats

Martin

LOL, why not ask them to merge into our group, Steve? http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif Tell them we might not get the average highest WU a day, but some of us are way way faster than they are http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

Dear Sir Anal,
I'm sorry, but you are sadly mistaken at what the purpose of seti is and what the MURC is all about. I for one happily decline.

If anyone wants to contact this team leader, here ya go: SirAnole@knsw.net

if i were to put my 2 cents worth in i'd have to say 'find yourself another patsy & i mean that in the nicest possible way'. it looks to me that mr nadelson thinly disguised offer of lets join hands & sing 'we are the world' as a grubby attempt to use our stats to improve their standing with little consideration of our own 'fun' quota. murc has a specific purpose to which i'm proud to be a member. a purpose which i'm sure is lost on you. if you didn't know seti has a purpose too, again to which i'm proud to do my bit. i'm sorry, but i think this person needs to learn a little respect for our endeavours and is not to be cheapened by some half-arsed propaganda exercise. i apologise fellow mucrers i think i need to go wipe the froth from my chin now.

Breezer,

My quote was cut-n-pasted, so the error was his. That's the typo I referred to in my mail, and that's why Greebe is Knights Who Say NI compatible http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

Of course, UBB's automagical hyperlinkification was a bit unfortunate in this case...

Jorden: it's a reference to (and picture of) a scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. See this transcript (http://www.serve.com/bonzai/monty/classics/TheKnightsWhoSayNi) for example. I like it, actually...

To wrap this up:

I received some very courteous responses from both David and Sir Anole, apologizing for the annoyance they caused us. I'd also pointed them to this thread, which was a bit of a shocker to David (could cancer's post have something to do with that http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif?).

Of course, I accepted their apologies, and wished them the best of luck.

We interrupt this program for a MURC-squad report.

A person going by the nickname "ZeqeRAGE" appears to be missing in action. He was last seen at his Seti@murc home team yesterday evening, 20:30 GMT. At the time, he was known to be 44th in their team ranking. ZeqeRAGE's current location is unknown.

Description: no physical attributes of ZeqeRAGE are known to MURC-squad at this time. However, the individual is known to carry around a minimum of 567 Seti "Work Units", and is likely to have a Matrox videocard in at least one of his computers.

Defection to another Seti@home team is feared.

If you have any information regarding ZeqeRAGE's current location, or can persuade him to rejoin his fellow Murcees in the quest for extraterrestial life, not to mention the hunt for Team Anandtech, please report to the MURC forums, in this thread.

Martin

(This is not good, we've only gained 166 WUs in today's All Teams rankings.)

Plain and utter BS !!

The data we're looking through in the WU's has been taken some time ago. Seti@home only asked our help because that way they could get results easier and more quickly than putting it all in a super-duper-computer!

Even when these so called aliens destroyed one satellie-dish, how could Seti be in jeopardy then? What they scan the skies with is multiple dishes together, all pointed at one point in the sky, creating a very large satellite-dish !!

I say it's plain BS !! Don't believe everything you read, Dyre http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

There's no way our European teammates would know this. I believe The Register was quoting the Weekly World News, arguably the US's most notorious "supermarket tabloid." The Weekly World News engages almost entirely in shamelessly fabricated stories about alien abductions, Elvis Presley and Hitler clones, half-human/half-alien babies, half-human/half-shellfish babies, Jesus visitations, Elvis's ghost visitations, Hitler's ghost visitations, Satan visitations, Satanic cults led by rogue nuns, miracle cures, etc.

There's some celebrity gossip thrown in. TV talk show hosts appear to be a particularly hot topic.

The report was submitted by The Register's Washington correspondent, so I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same publication.

I am not exagerating about the editorial content of this publication.

Guru,

I think it would be as simple as getting an E-mail account from like Hotmail and having all interested login with the Seti account associated with that address. This way multiple people will work on WU's but only "one" account receives credit.

I just don't know if anyone could carry their current units forward to the new name. For example, would my 1636 WU's carry over, or would they just sit there?

As usual, "average" is in digital hours.

Now how the fsck does Rags get an average of 1.86 hours (1 hr 52 min)?

AMC: that sounds like you're using the screensaver-version. Set it to "run always", and "blank after 0 minutes". A better solution would be to use the i386-winnt-cmdline.exe version. Get it from http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html .

Way to go Maggi! Fire up those fridges again http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif.

I'm running the commandline version under Win 98, and I'm averaging about 8 hours /WU on my P3-500, compared to other people's posts this seems a bit slow to me, anything I can do to speed it up ?

Snikka,

We (Alpha Centauri) have also some PIII 500 running. They also need 8 hr's a WU.
I think that is normal.

My next question would then be, if I were to get a new processor, which would be faster for running SETI - Athlon, Coppermine or Culeron ?

Now I might be able to get 2 Culerons for the same price as 1 of the other as I have RAM and harddrives enough for 2 systems.

I believe that Coppermines are typically faster than Athlons. Celerons are (because of their smaller cache) generally not very good for seti. However, two Celeron-systems are quite likely to beat one PIII.

Whether your choice of processor should depend on seti WU-times? I'll leave that up to you. I'd rather consider it a bonus...

Martin

Maggi

Hi Martin

Celerons benefit from their full speed L2 cache, even if it's smaller.

That new Celeron-II (Cumine with 128KB L2 cache) should easily outperform an 'ordinary' Katmai, but a real Coppermine should stomp both. Main letdown for Athlons are their 'slow' L2 caches. If those were also at full core speed, you'd have one heck of a CPU.

I'll let you folks now how the 600s Cumines do their job as soon as the rig's up and working.

Cheers,
Maggi

Sorry for being unavailable that long, but I had too much work to do and was co-organizing our annual LAN party.

Anyway ... I was sort of shocked that Alpha Centauri had passed me already before I fired up again those eight MIPS R10000. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

Quick summary of my 'crunching farm':

1 G4-450 taking ~6 hours with the screensaver
8 G3-350 ~10 hours with screensaver

1 double P3-450 ~8 hours cmd-line version
1 P3-550 ~don't know how long cmd-line
1 P2-300 ~way too long cmd-line
1 Cel333A-500 ~8 hours cmd-line

8 MIPS R10000-200 ~don't know - must check

soon to be added:

1 double P3-600E ... http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

... most of the above do not run 24/7, but more like during the night time when the machines are not needed for working.

http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif ok, but not Seti, but RC5 http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif.

Anyway, What really bothers me is that SETI doesn't makes optimized clients. I think that the Athlon with his 3way independent FPU is superior, in spite of the "slow" L2 cache.
I think RC5 has different clients or options for different CPU's, am I right? For example there is a new RC5 client which is optimized for the Athlon and brings about 30% speed boost with it.
I will stay with Seti either. Who wants to calculate strange 56bit keys anyway??

The RC5 client is a good optimized client for Athlon processors.
The Athlon really dumps any processor on the market with this client. (My friends PIII 500 makes 1.2Mkey/s and my Athlon 500(@700) makes 2.4Mkey/s and don'tell me the 200mhz can make 1.2 Mkey/s more).

I have switched my athlon to RC5 but will let my K6-2 400 on seti. So Jorden don't be afraid you'll be able to gain my place soon [I have to precise I was really proud to get in front of you ;-)].

Hi Ees,

Thanks for your reply. I've been away and I read just know.
That doesn't seem to be the problem . I'd already set it to "Run always" and yes it's a client version . Remenbver i said it loks like it runs faster whem i'm using the computer and slower when is not beeing used
Again , any ideas . I feel the need for speed (crunching WU's).

BTW, who cares about RC5 ? Of course giving enough time anybody can do it ? But helping a scientific project it looks to me more useful than finding ways to break keys ...

Ees

AMC,

But is it also set to "blank after 0 minutes"?

It sound to me as if your computer is happily seti-ing along during the day, but then at night the screensaver kicks in. That will trash your WU-times. So, if you're using seti as screensaver, set it to blank after a short period. (For that matter, I think you can disable any screensaving, except for "blank screen" if you've set it to run always.)

The cmd-line version may still be faster though.

Martin

Then again, maybe I'm just talking out of the back of my neck http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif; I don't use Windows that often...
