Hmmm, I seem to remember that the previous thread also warped back after one of my posts... Wazzup?

From outer space.

Well, I cant crunch units at the moment as all of my boxes are doing work of an important nature (playing at parallel decryption). Only my WinPap boxes (which cant play in the unix games) are processing.

I may be some time too - as my algorithm is definately not 'great' - and the AI is being difficult when chatting to its mates.

Does anyone know how I can give my WU's to someone else?

I'm quiting Seti@MURC, but want to give my WU's to my closest 'enemy', Kruzin, because we had a good fight for positions the past couple of months. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

That used to be possible, but the WU-transfer thingy has been disabled, because it could be abused. Bummer; I still have 164 units as 'Martin', which I'd like to donate to myself http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif.

On a more important note: why quit?

But now for a better message: Rank #29 !!! And only 250 WU's away from the next victim.

And for the next good message: i entered the Top100 ;-)

I'm quiting because I don't like the seti program to run in my background constantly. It interferes with Netscape, general internet and alot of games.

Next to that I want to give my PC some more rest these days, against having it on all day.

Read between the lines: I got my own flat, and have to look for ways of saving money now http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

For those trying to combin your WU under one name:

A) Create a new group
B) Join the group to MURC
c) Log in to each of your old accounts and join the new group.

How about a single group in the MURC for "abandoned" WUs. This one group could allow those lower in the ranks to move up, as there would be many less names posting 0 WUs. If you wanted them back at a later time, they would still be there. And MURC doesn't loss any of the WUs!!!

Oh and RUSSIA fell last night!!!
We are now #29 behind 'Austin Shaggers'. Who will fall Friday is over. ATTACK!!!

Atelier Media and Alpha Centauri are examples of the type of group within a group. So maybe Helmchen or Mega can answer how to do it. Without Guyver we're back behind the Russians instead of threatening to overrun Hungary. Let's get him back ASAP.

Hi Paddy,

the difference is caused mostly by my full speed 2nd level cache and probably also a little my faster system bus.

I OCed my Celery to 500MHz, hence the L2 cache runs also at 500MHz. Your P2-300 (Deschute .35 micron) uses its L2 cache only at half of the clock speed, i.e. in your case 150 MHz ... http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif

I'd suggest the you get rid of that plastic cage surrounding your CPU, grab soem decent heatsinks and fans and crank it up !

Hi Paddy,

My PII 300 at work using the screen saver version takes 14-15 hrs/wu. My wife's K6II 300 at home takes 18-20 hrs/wu. Neither is not overclocked. No idea why yours would be so much slower. I also run a couple of Unix/Solaris versions at work which take much more than 30 hrs/wu. So much for the wonderful world of Sparc pizza boxes.

To have a PII-300 running a WU with 22hrs is really , let me say, not fast.

It runs under NT 4.0, the fastest (Windows)Platform for SETI.

Paddy remember to shot down all programs in the background that using your cpu-time, and use the text only client.

MegaManX4
27th March 2000, 21:49
Hey Laurie,

The PII-266 is my , aehm ...WinNT "testcomputer". It really only works on SETI 24hrs a day. But those other comps here are all celerons, most of them 333 ones, and they only need 12-14 hrs a WU. And that is with working on them. Something must be wrong with your comp. I hope you haven't have a Screensaver running! Even this SETI thing steals CPU Power. If so, try blank screen as Screensaver.
Or do you have lower than 64MB Ram?

Mega

Laurie
28th March 2000, 11:42
Hi Mega,
No screensavers here. Just a lot of memory hog apps such as Arcview and our database gui(http://www.elp.gov.bc.ca/clrs/). This PII 300 has 128 megs of ram and just now I checked my memory usage in NT task manager and it is over 150 megs. My hard drive swaps all day long. Our sys admin doesn't care as long as the thing works. A few weeks ago I was running some Arcview scripts that did a lot of database inquiries and polygon manipulations and watched the memory usage go over 600 megs. Another thing, we are unable to defrag our hard drives because the software has never been purchased. Talk about being short sighted. Hi, Ho, Hi, Ho, its back to work I go.

I can't get the new commandline version (2.4) to run on any of my Win98SE computers. It hangs up on the first "Doing Baseline Smoothing" statement and never gets beyond that point. The 2.0 version seems to work fine. Any ideas?

Brian,

From the (linux) README:

-verbose
print a running summary of the work being done.
Starting with the version 2.4 clients, the client is silent
to stdout during processing. There are messages at the start
and finish of processing a work unit, but there are no progress
messages printed during processing unless this option is used.

I assume the dos-client behaves the same, so probably it *is* running.

Cheer Ees (martin) for the info. i checked it out and i was waaaaay down the bottom. i was kinda suprised that when i have seti screen up and leave it for a while, i churns out 1 wu every 4-5 hours, if left running in the back ground(i have it set so it runs all the time) it takes approx. 4 times as long... is this normal?

Actually, I was about to propose a race to the next millennium (as in: would I be at 4000 before you're at 3000?). But since most of my computers will be down for the weekend, I think I won't http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

ees,
I upgrading the switch & router software at work next week and reconfiguring the port filters on the firewall, => my units will prob go throught the floor.
But by thursday I will try and get as many machines crunching seti as I can, I'll have a go at hitting 100 units per day, though I'll prob only get about 50.

Jorden - I'm going to claim 5.5 hours/wu for my PIII 800. I don't average that, but that's my fastest computer.

Cancer, always have the visual version minimized, and turn off the screen saver. The graph takes aproximatly 60% of your cpu just to draw... So leave it minimized and set your screen saver to off or a blank screen.

Hiya,

anyone noticed the group "Two 4 You - mobiles Discoservice" in the top list of all groups at rank #63?

They are only three members but crunched 25996 WU's in two days according to Ees' stats.
*computer on* ... calculate ... wow, approx. 9 WU's per minute ???

Strange

forget about "Two 4 You - mobiles Discoservice" weve just been bumped down to #29 by "Eccentrica Gallumbits".
She must have given up her day (erm sorry night) job to be able to produce 20000 units a day.
Definatly the best bang since the big one!!

Grumble, grumble, d@mn boy wonder, grumble.

AnandTech's now a 1000 WU ahead of us. It was close for a while.

I couldn't help but notice "Eccentrica Gallumbits." How do seven people process 20,000+ WU's in 24 hours? And that appeared to be an off day. The day before, they uploaded 25,000+!

Sheesh!

1000 WU ahead of us for AnandTech? Looks like only a little over 500 when I checked.
Still, they sure did have a big jump over the last two days.

Any other network admins out there? I am very interested in a "wrapper" for the seti command line client to run it as an NT service, preferably only when no one is logged into the machine.

Well, both "Two 4 You" and "Eccentrica Gallumbits" have crawled back wherever they came from.

Two 4 You had a member called "Are we a cheating company or what?" and Gallumbits had one called "Are We CHEATING? U-BET!!"; I guess they both re-processed a bunch of "30 second units" or something.

Regarding the wrapper script: I'm not into NT, but if someone's interested in a Unix-version of that, I can post the perl-script that I use on my Linux-boxes.
