Thought that first one started to be a bit long.

I have the same problem every 2-3 day, its really frustrating coming to work and find that a unit have been ready since late last night and not sent. I thought this was a problem with my ISP or something, but if more of us have the same, cant some clever guy explain exactly how to solve this.
What are you guys doing t o optimise your seti under win98? Think I read somewhere that there was a script thing that made it a bit faster?

D'OH, I had slowed my rig down (to standard speed) to flash the MAX's BIOS, and install the 5.30 Drivers. I've been chugging away putting up WU, and with the icon blinking RED/GREEN I maximized it to deal with the latest "failure to connect" and what did I notice? A very slow time on the WU! http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif

Set the speed back up and am moveing along nicely again.

Brian R.

Here's a question: What processor is best for running Seti (at equivalent clock speed)?

Wombat
15th October 1999, 20:54
Probably something with a strong FPU. A believe the SETI@Home stuff relies heavily on Fast-Fourier Transform algorithms, which can be a real time killer. The sick part about it is, the SETI people don't want it to go any faster. Intel has already re-written the client to use SSE, but SETI refuses to distribute it. Also, offers of 3DNow! enhanced code have been made, but SETI said that they weren't interested. Both of these offers would double (or better) the number of packets that could be processed.

------------------
K6-2/350@400, 503+ rev 1.2a, 128MB PC100 RAM, Millenium G200, RH6.1 w/ 2.2.12-20, Win98, and too many classes

Guyver
15th October 1999, 21:00
Then let's get intel to give it to us directly... Too bad if SETI doesn't want it any faster... They can start having sets double-checked like the Prime Search people... That would effectively double the number of units to scan...

Guyv

breezer
16th October 1999, 10:02
Guys, we are processing unit as fast as seti can record them, they will run out if they release any faster code.

Wombat
16th October 1999, 12:56
yes, and?
What's the harm in that? Oh, they might lose all that precious hype, and sponsorship, and someone that could actually use the idle cycles might actually benefit.
Sorry for being such a cynic, but I really think SETI should be up front about what's going on.

I was looking at my personal stats for SETI, and it shows the number of work units received as greater than the number it has sent out to me, by about 20 units.
WTF?
Anyone else with similar "statistics"?

Brian R.
18th October 1999, 11:05
Mine are 382 received and 358 sent out. However, I looked the other day and they were within one unit of one another.

By the way, hecubus, why aren't you a MURCer? Did you do something wrong?

People behind SETI@home-project never estimated the computer taking part on the project to be such an amount that it is, which is why they are heavily lacking capacity to deliver enough works units and receive/check completed units.
If SSE/3DNow! client was released, it would be catastrophic for them, since 1) there simply isn't enough material to be processed and 2) if there was, they wouldn't be able to check all the received WUs.

Poor planning on their behalf I think.. The good news is that SETI@home 2 is already being planned to continue the work after #1 is completed in 2 years or so.

I'm pretty sure that you will be waving back at me down the road though, one of my computers is going off-line in the near future.

Also, I'm curious - what types of systems are people using for their SETI machines?

Me:
Dual P3 Xeon/1024k cache 500Mhz, some crappy vid card.
Dual P2 300Mhz, G200.
Single P3 450Mhz, G400MAX!
Command-line client, 1 instance per processor.

Unfortunately, the Xeon will have to quit seti for its real job soon...

Yes - Ive noticed Guyver speeding along nicely behind me - catching fast to say the least. Im damned if I'll let him pass though.

And thus - just for the MURC seti cause, Ive enrolled a room full (16 machines) of PII450 boxes for the seti cause. Now, if only I could work out how to get the seti process up as a service (Guyver - you must know you sod), and 'niced' so that it doesnt use resources ....

I Don't know about service, but it doesn't take much to add something to the startup groups as a batch file.

In a previous thread someone had posted a neat little routine where it runs the character client, then calls itself to rerun the batch file if it dies off.

exam..

@ECHO OFF
REM bat1.bat
seti.exe
call bat1.bat

That would do it for NT/95/98 . place a shortcut to the batch in the startup groups.

The seti GUI automatically runs at low priority under NT, it doesn't seem to take a lot of resources under 9x.

The character does take quite a few resources.

Under SCO you can place entries in one of 2 places.

/etc/rc2.d/ - you can create a file to start seti.

or in /etc/inittab - you can create an entry using the "once" - instead of off or respawn to start seti during boot.

If you have more than 1 processor, spawn more than one instance.

Jorden, It doesn't take long to set up seti on 15 PCs. The hard part is keeping them active once they start sending in data at different times. There is an art in timing the output so that I don't have to babysit them. It seems like 25% of the time they don't connect. Sometimes, none of them connect over the space of hours.

Hi there,

(I just posted this as a new message; thought I'd better CC it here as well.)

I've just finished creating a 'meta' stats-page for the MURC SETI@Home team. It's somewhat like the page for Team Amiga.

It lists (for all members that I have data for) the rank and completed WUs over the last few days. Progress in completed WUs is shown as well (so you can see who are the fastest members). One thing that's immediately apparent is that it won't be long before I get kicked out of the number 1 slot...

I haven't had the time to create a fancy page with all the bells and whistles. Just the numbers...

If all goes well, it should get updated automatically once every hour (at half past). It's not fool-proof at all though, so your milage may vary...

Have a look, and tell me what you think:

Drop me a line (ees@tele2.nl) if you find any errors.

The character-based version automatically connects - just like the graphic version. If you are having trouble, it is likely that the problem is an unresponsive SETI server. Try again later.

Read on another thread about how the text client was so much faster. I was wandering-

Is there a text client that will work in Win98? Is it really that much faster than running the graphic version minimized? If I can cut my time per WU in half, then watch out!!! But I daught the differeance can be that great, please prove me wrong.

The text version for WIN98 is
i386-winnt-cmdline.exe at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unix.html

On my PIII, I found it to be around 20% faster than the graphical version.

Stephan,
Don't give up yet! I don't run the text client yet, so I'm of no help ,but check if you can right click on the SETI tray icon and goto preferences, and choose conect automaticaly, thats how to do it in GUI version. Maybe the text version has something simular?
If not the US/CANADIAN people here are mostly at work now, so chech back after midnight or tommorrow your time, I'm sure someone can help you http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif.

Thanks Mark.
I’m using the GUI client on other comp and have no problem, thing is that Brian say that the text version should dial automatically, but my don’t, so, either I have a problem in my NT installation or I’m doing something wrong.
I have also tried to fix this temporary by writing a short bat file to do multiple WU without conecting using things like
cd one
seti.exe -stop_after_process
if errorlevel -1073741510 goto stop
cd..
cd two
seti.exe -stop_after_process
if errorlevel -1073741510 goto stop
:stop

but what ever i do, –stop_after _process don’t seem to work, it still try’s to connect, but without dialling the modem.
I will give it one more day, and then it’s out of this computer

Stefan who is starting to hate NT

JSB,

Even though you are running the character client, you can still connect automatically. Just configure (if you are running it) Internet Explorer to connect automatically, and to disconnect if idle for more than xx minutes (you get to pick here), and then stop, restart the character client. When it's ready it will make a sockets call, that an IE/Winsock component will intercept, and automatically dial the internet.

If someone could help me with my dial up problem I would do 4 more wu a day on my dual xenon rig, I cant make the character version to automatically dial up thru the modem, if I manually connect and then run seti it do connect to the server, exactly how do you tart char seti to do the connection?

Brian R.

Once in a while, I have connection problems. I end up reinstalling the modem from scratch and this usually solves the problem.

The units stop calculated at about 8am on monday and start up again at about 6pm on Friday.
This will keep me within any seti return deadlines.

Sounds like you don't worry about communication problems. I have a poor record with communicating with SETI. Also, I've been getting error messages lately which state something like 'state.txt file is unavailable' or something like that. This stops it calculating at some arbitrary point. This is not a send or receive thing.

Yeah, we're missing someone all right. And that's not even the worst part: if I'm not mistaken, he appears to have taken all of his credits with him.

According to the SETI website, this should not have happened:

If you are currently a member of a group and are switching to another group, the new group will receive all of your new credit, but the old group will keep all of your old credit.

And to add to this, no SETI club team statistics were published on November 19, which means that I'm missing a day for my club teams stats (http://www.casema.net/~ees/seticlubs.html) page.

Do you guys know how much performance hit the comp takes if you are running several instance of seti at once? I have been running six! at once on my dual Xeon, because of the connection problem and it doesn't seem to make much difference. Now when it seems to connect I will try to run only 2.

Could the founder of the Matrox Users team try to 'regenerate' our stats-page (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/team/team_25678.html) (like the instructions at the top of the page explain)?

I have the strong impression that a large part of our WUs are not being counted: for the period Nov 22-30, SETI's page claims that we've completed 684 WUs, whereas my database records indicate that it should be closer to 1700... Maybe regenerating the stats can help close that gap?

Then again, I could just be paranoid... Have SETI-statistics taken over my personality? Does ET have the root-password on my machine? Is there a conspiracy between SETI and Team RivaZone? Did Lee Harvey Oswald really...

c:\seti\01\seti.exe -stop_after_process
c:\seti\02\seti.exe -stop_after_process
etc....

This will close/stop the executable when it reaches 100% and moves swiftly onto the next unit.

I use stop after send when sending the units at the weekend.

I was bound to drop to 2nd place anyhow. So 3rd (and soon 4th, 5th, ...) place it will be... it's just that Bert was so much looking forward to snatching that top spot for just a few days... http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

Brian R,
I have a created a user login for seti which launches the nt version on windows 98, seti is installed on c drive. (c drive is hidden from students so they cant see whats on the disk).
I come i early on monday and restart the machines.
I will use zenworks to copy files to pcs when i have some time to do it.

We are connected to superjanet so there are no connection problems, a unit is uploaded/downloaded and started again in 5 seconds.

At home I download a batch of units and process them without going on-line when finished by using the - "stop_after_send.txt" file, stops the reconnect in an hour problem.

I'm just falling down the list now http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif I'm working again over the holidays though, so hopefully, I'll pull in a few more units...

And, I would try to find out about those who are over 100th place, but the stupid site just keeps giving me 'page not found' when I try to edit or do anything. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif

Try again later.

From looking at names/email addresses in the team, I can only see the following users, apart from all the regular MURCers (and MURCetts!):

A bunch of beta boys
Ant (MURC)
Phil (MURC)
Alex (Matrox Techie)

There may be others, but they're under weird names, or not using an easily recognisable email address.

Anyways, if y'all want a 'top 251' list, look no further:

PIII450 (permanently on) webserver
PIII620 (permanently on) my home PC
Cel 500 (permanently on) my other home PC

Ill be losing the PPro200 when the PII400 takes over from it - im soak testing it now. The other boxes are my 'toys'. I work as a computing lecturer, so I could enlist a lot more (as in hundreds more), but it would require some bribes http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

Ees, yup, they could push out more, but the webservers (Linux) are heavily used, so the seti process gets relegated a lot to lower division.

The workstations get Seti'd from 7pm to 8am, just about enough to knock off a unit - and theyre NT http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif

My Home machines get used for compiler compiling and gaming, as well as video work, so the Seti process goes on/off all the time, and I use 98/NT and Linux on them too ...

sigh ... I guess I was that breakfast ... right, Stefan ?

http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/biggrin.gif

Anyways, I usually run two instances of the cmd-line version on my working rig (see below) and my home rig (also below) needs a li'l less than 10 hours to crunch a unit.

In the last couple of days I installed it on my new working G4-450 and that puppy uses a graphical interfaces version. Despite that slower graphical version, it needs less than 8 hours to complete a unit ... all I can do is wait for MacOS 9.1 to run the Mac-cmd-line version ...

Soon we'll be on TEAM 3DNOW's door (well maybe not so soon without a few defections), maybe then some of those who in the "OLD" days of MURC@SETI wouldn't join because they were in TEAM 3DNOW, will join the fold, and abandon their errant ways.

Way to go ANT, a little advertizing on your front page has paid of good dividends, in new users!!!

Guardian, use the setiathome-1_3_1386-winnt-cmdline.exe under Win98... works like a breeze in a DOS window http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

The only thing you have to think about is to quit the program when you close down Win98, as it doesn't automatically close the DOS box (I haven't found a way yet, anyway).

Hello Maggi,
I have a strange MAC tip for you, I have an original IMAC (233Mhz) running seti at home, it has always taking ca 20 hours to do a Wu for it, I start Seti and then shrink it, but the other day I did it another way, I went in to preference and turned on the screensaver (5 min) and goto blank (10 min) started seti and shrunk it. Now it only takes 15 hours, first I thought that it was a temporary thing, that sometimes it takes les time to do a Wu, but it has now been doing 10-15 units and all of them has taken around 15 hours. Try it and se if it is the same on your G4.

I don't know about a joke, but this reminds me of a book called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Phillip K. Dick. This book was the basis for the movie "Blade Runner". Anyway, in the story (not the moview), there is a guy named Murcer who is constantly climbing a mountain and people are always throwing rocks at him. An endless treck which anyone can empathize with through an electronic box in their homes. Ring a bell?

The upgrade started to get rough...
The masive server was toused...
If not for the courage of the fearless crew...

And lo 'I wake - refreshed - a tad sweaty - with a nasty throat' and Im top. The interesting thing is that there is now the chance for that 'close run race thang' to happen. This time of year interferes heavily with my ability to set up boxes ..... so it should be interesting to say owt.

Ack! That is a depressing negative number. And on a day when Ars Technica picked up over 54,000 WU's.

Next time we pick up someone like Tomi, we should do a little outreach. Maybe a little wining and dining. A "contest" win or two (nothing like a G450 and Rainbow Runner showing up at your door). Preemptive tech support calls. ("Hi, we represent the Matrox Users SETI team, and we were wondering how that new board is working out for you. Really? Yes, that can be a bit tricky. We'll send someone right over.")

If someone with 54,000 WU's shows up, we should all take turns driving him to work.

Hi All,

Well, I finally got my act together and signed on here. Working on my third unit now. Using 2 computers: a P3-600 and a PPro 233/512k. Thanks to Mike (Greebe) for pushing me along http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif
