  • What have they done to my PowerDesk?

obviously I haven't had access to the Win9x/ME drivers which sport the new implementation, but I like the current WIn2k implementation (the old one). The only thing that's missing is that you can't save the dualhead mode to a desktop scheme in quickdesk. If that was possible, you could switch to any dualhead mode with a hotkey whenever you wanted, and without the need of weird complicated tree-like dualehad menu structures

What have they done to my PowerDesk?

A couple of days ago I installed Win98 and decided to try the 6.51.012 drivers.
Everything was fine, but today we got a question at a local hardware forum: Which settings must one apply with a G400 DH in order to see the same thing on both monitors?

I was about to answer him with the usual "use DualHead Clone" crap, but then decided to take a quick peek at the Control Panel.
Okay, so I had taken a quick glance at it before and knew that the DualHead tab now sports this new tree-like look.
But what really confused me was the DualHead Clone settings. There was no "Enable DualHead Clone" checkbox. WHAT YOU SAY?
On other tabs (the DVDMax & DualHead Multi-Display) there was one, but not in DualHead Clone.
Well, after a long 15 minutes of searching I spotted it in the HotKeys section. A search at the Matrox Support Forums confirmed this: DualHead Clone can now be enabled only by assigning a HotKey to it. Now all I need is optimal refresh, I wonder where that option is hidden.

What I'm trying to say is that in my opinion, the DualHead tab in it's new form is WAAAY too complicated. Okay, so I might be used to the "old" layout, but even then I think it is starting to remind me of the menus in Geoff Crammond's Formula One games.
If a person (me) that's grown up with Matrox and PCs can't find how to enable an option, how are "normal" users supposed to?

    Anyone share my opinion? Comments?

Actually, I find it pretty neat. Just assign a key and you're done.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

You're absolutely right about this. It's just that it doesn't say "to use the DualHead Clone feature, you need to assign a HotKey". After using the previous PowerDesk, my natural reaction was "HotKeys would be great, if I only could find where to enable the damn DH Clone thing".
There's (kind of) one step too much, you expect the HotKeys to be some sort of Advanced features. It would (IMHO) be better if clicking "DualHead Clone" would bring you straight to the screen where you select your HotKeys - after all, you can't use it without 'em.

Well you can't have it all, can you?

Maggi-> My thoughts exactly; some people don't even know what the Windowskeys on the keyboard do, let alone that they're going to find something out about a hotkey for their videocard.
Hell, they'll probably buy a VGA-splitter or something.

IMHO, they should have not restricted it to a hot-key only !!!

It's great to have that option, but unless you're a geek and fiddle with everything anyways, you might be sort of lost.

Heck, I know plenty of people who don't even know what a hot-key is !
