  • Best War Movies Ever

The best ones for me are:

    2) The Deerhunter
    3) Tora Tora Tora
    4) Apocalypse Now
    5) Platoon
    6) Memphis Belle

"Saving Private Ryan" was good for the first 30 minutes the most
"U-571" a joke compare to the German Classic Das Boot.

        not to forget:

        - Kelly´s Heroes
        - The Dirty Dozen
        - The Guns of Navarone
        - Full Metal Jacket (the book´s better though)
        - Cassualties of War
        - The Thin Red Line (was pretty ok)

and offcourse Casablanca. I know... not a war movie in the traditional sense, but nevertheless it WAS set in WW2

FMJ didn't make my list. I only saw it once, though, and it seemed pointless, no story to be told at all.

Read the book instead, it´s much better than the movie. The movie is only about half of the book!

It´s called "Short timers", can´t remember the author.

Other movies to add to the list:

                - Ran
                - Paths Of Glory
                - A Midnight Clear

The best version of "Das Boot" is certainly the full-length TV series (which has a total running time of about six hours if I remember correctly). With its long, depressing sequences between the action scenes, it brings out the scary atmosphere in the submarine even better than the shorter version that was shown in the cinemas.

BTW, "Full Metal Jacket" is a masterpiece in my opinion. But I guess as with every Kubrick movie, there are people who love it and there are people who hate it. (I am one of his fans - last weekend I saw the newly restored version of "2001" on a big screen and I was completely floored...)

I want to see 'Enemy at the Gates'!!!

It's a new movie about a real life story that took place at the Battle of Stalingrad in WWII. From what I take, the Germans are being held back by a Russian sniper and don't like it. So the Germans send in their best sniper to take him out. So the movie revolves around Russia and Germany's best snipers going at it.

                            Hell ya!

March 16th for the US release =)

                              Jammrock,

maybe you shouldn't expect too much from "Enemy At the Gates". It was shown at the opening of the Berlin Film Festival and the reviews were not that great. Most critics said that while the movie is brillant in technical terms, the storyline leaves a lot to be desired.
(but I'm probably going to see it anyway...
