  • What's a homepage do?

Right. I've got my domain name sorted ( http://www.steve-cooper.co.uk ) but what do I put on it? Everyone post the URLs to your own homepages (if you have one).... I wanna copy y'all!

PS: I know it's just forwarding at the moment - I'm waiting for the paper work so I can register it properly to a server at work...

    Cheers,
    Steve

It's my first attempt at html so don't laugh. Here it is:

        http://members.home.net/dhilliar/Base1.htm

I used FrontPage2000. Was very easy to learn with.

edit: Here is the mech variants page so you don't have to use a password:

I used the Homesite demo for those. Basically html code.

edit- DAMN! Looks like I've got a stray *blink* in there.

If you don't know how to be original, Steve, you can always just post a big Under Construction sticker on it

Or you go to that page we talked about and try something from there.

OK Jorden, I think posting links to a site like xxxxxx.com is a very bad decision and I think you should change or delete your post. Personally, I don't care what site people go to but kids(under 18) frequent this forum and it is not appropriate.

                My 2 cents,

                Dave

Well, I'd post the link to my page, but it's completely unrepresentatvie of my skills (it hasn't been updated in nearly 2 years). And furthermore, the stuff that I put on the page has very little bearing on my life anymore.

Instead, I am going to interpose two rants into this thread.

First, (and most of you probably won't care about this, but I'm going to rant anyway ). Dave, why on earth are using Inner Sphere names for Clan mechs? Huh? Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine. The Timberwolf is an Clan Omnimech, therefore (especially since you claim these to be Diamond Shark variants), you should use the Clan names.
                    TimberWolf, not mad putty tat
                    Dire Wolf, not daishi
Mad Dog, not ugly bird of prey (although admittedly, the IS name for this one is better )
and I can never remember the real name of the masakari.
At any rate, it doesn't really matter, I just happen to loathe using IS names for Clan mechs (copyrights and trademarks be damned). That stupid company that owns the rights to the original names can take a flying leap off a very high cliff.

Ok, rant number two, and this is actually relevant to the thread. If any of you are seriously into html design, this site should be your best friend.
                    http://www.w3.org
                    The World Wide Web Consortium
These are the guys that establish the specs for the various versions of HTML. Here's why you should make avid use of this site, and I quote, frontpage "...produces an unholy amalgamation of CSS and HTML 3.2...". Actually thats closer to a paraphrase since I can't remember where I read that. At any rate, I am going to put forth a plea to everyone here who does html design to please try and make your pages syntacticly correct. I don't care what version, but use the appropriate doctype headers by including a DTD, and stick to it. Lately I've been using the HTML 4.0 Strict DTD. There is also a DTD for HTML 4.0 Transitional and for 4.0 with Frame support. Or use 3.2 if you want. I don't much care, but pick one and code according to that spec.

Frontpage does not produce valid HTML pages. Neither does Netscape Composer. Or any other HTML design program. The only way to make sure that it comes out right is to either do it all by hand (my preferred method), or to go through and check it by hand after using FP, or composer or whatever.

You may be wondering what the advantages of doing this are. First and foremost, you maintain compatability across all browsers and all platforms, basically. If you code to the 4.0 spec then you loose a certain amount of compatability. The only browser that fully supports html 4.0 and CSS2 is NS6/Mozilla. IE 5 mostly supports it and I don't know about Opera or any of the other smaller browsers. NS 4.7x has pretty miserable support.

Don't let that deter you though. Beyond the fact that it maintains compatability, working with stylesheets in html 4.0 is very nice. It's far easier to layout your pages the way you want them, and you can also create a master style sheet to be used across your entire site. Make a change in one file and your entire site changes to match it! Far simpler then trying to change every single page.

Hmmm.... This got a lot longer than it should have.
                    I'll go now.

By using the w3 validator, you definitely loose any Netscape compatibility, so it is a great thing to do. I really mean it, who in they right mind would dare to use something like Netscape 4.x or even the devilish 6 today?
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

is a single page that I knocked up for a friend that was setting up a dating agency. It's done with one of the DreamWeaver templates.
