View Full Version : [RANT] Enough about the G800

Hey all

<rant>
Is it just me who is tired of seeing these countless topics devoted to the G800 (including this one, yeah I know)? No one seems to know anything about its existence, forget about details, and all I see is endless speculation. So how about we all agree to shut up about this thing and let Matrox do their thing? Too many valid questions/comments about the existing Matrox cards are being lost in the G800 forest. Maybe Ant can set up a "G800 speculation" forum for those who must speak. Until then, could we please not have any more talk of it unless you actually know something?
</rant>

Please bear in mind that I am writing this after countless little heart attacks suffered by seeing the word "G800" in the subject line of a post at MURC.

Later,
Rahul

I agree let's stop posting bullshit rumors and speculations about it!!!!!!!!

Well I disagree. I'm tired of hearing people bitch about others peoples posts. Everyone is entitled to post just about anything they want within the specific topic. Nobody controls anyone else and therefore nobody has the right to get pissed over someone elses post that falls in the topic category. If you don't want to hear about then don't read it. I like to hear all of the rumours, speculations, lies, truths and anything else anyone conjurs up out of there brains.

Well, I use MURC as my source of Matrox info, and consider the people who post here both knowledgeable and enterprising in their search for information. I also admit that I have kept my eyes peeled on this forum for any news, since it will undoubtedly be the firt place that I personally will hear about the next Matrox card. At the same time, I am a little tired of seeing posts with the subject "G800 info" or "When will the G800 be out anyway?", which both increase my blood pressure and leave me completely unsatisfied. Sound familiar? http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

Maybe I am just losing my patience with Matrox <hint hint http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif >, and taking it out on the poor people of this forum. God knows a lot of us Matrox loyalists have waited long enough for this card, and fought off the Nvidia/3dfx temptation. I enjoyed the initial speculative posts we had that had 100s of replies, but if one more person posts a question about the G800 AND I am in a bad mood AND it's clear they haven't searched the forum, well, I'll be naming my UT bots after them pretty soon. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif Maybe just a short note at the top of the forum page, saying "Nobody knows anything about the G800" would help.

Of course, I doubt if my rambling will have any effect. Nevertheless, like you said, Dave, it's a forum, and people like me will post what they want. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

I'm afraid it's inevitable, we have the same thing everytime, had it for the G450, G400, G200, G100, G000, m3D...

I certainly hope they're not waiting on BitBoys. And if they are, they're most likely waiting on a technology specificaion, not Bitboys' actual production of chips - which is something that can never happen. If it did, it would be like one of those universal paradoxes like meeting yourself in a time machine. Very bad.

Let's clear couple of things out...

first, XBA is only technology which is used by Glaze3D (or whatever.) chip.

second, XBA technology is ready, Glaze3D not.

third, XBA can be lincensed by other companies from Bitboys, but Glaze3D cannot be lincensed because it is their product!

For G400 Matrox licensed EMBM from bitboys, not the whole Pyramid 3D ( thank god! http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif ) chip.

For G800, has been rumoured that Matrox could have licensed XBA technology, not the whole Glaze 3D chip.

Hopefully this made things little bit easier to understand. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

Sorry, that's what I meant. Someone earlier had simply said "oh, Bitboys says next year for their chip, and that means next year for G800", and I was saying they were licensing the technology, not the chip.

Sorry that your tired of hearing about the G800 (some of us are just tired of _waiting_!).

I think that we should be able post about next gen Matrox cards here, even though it's just speculation (damn I thought they were going to show something at Comdex!). I wouldn't mind it if there were a Future Products board though.

Everyone is becoming crazy because Matrox is lagging behind, and it´s true, we have to admit it... the only way would be to start selling G800´s in the next two months. The way things are going, Matrox will lose its competitive edge in the 3D gaming community. This means money. I really find this strange, Matrox abandoning (or so it seems) the market like this. I hope they have a bunny (with G800 written all over it) inside the wizard´s hat.
This doesn´t shake me very much, though. I consider Matrox the coolest brand in the market, and I could have a GTS in my system, but I prefer the G400 out of coolness (and picture) http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif. I´ll stick with Matrox anyways.

Those who are abandoning the ship like rats are: "oh, I couldn´t take the slowness of my games any longer (50 fps http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif), forgive me for I have sinned, I bought a Geforce. The G800 will never come out!!!...."
I´ve seen a couple of these...

As for you, kewlcat:

RELAX! It´s just natural that people vent out this stuff... most of these things are a joke! My "G800 annouced!!!" thread was a way to play with this, for example. I agree with Helevitia.

More speculations on an unconfirmed product.

Facts:
* DirectX8 is released.
* Fresh gossip from MURC: "...G800 will feature some of special techniques that we could haven't faced before. [...] The technique is from a certain 3rd Party"
* Bitboys just released a new webpage design (http://www.bitboys.fi), but still no product release.

Is the (soon-to-be-released) G800 going to feature Bitboys' XBA?

By definition, the Soapbox Forum is for rants and OT issues.
By your own addmission in your title for this thread, this is a rant. It has nothing to do with Matrox Hardware, just your opinion on other people's opinions/speculations.
This thread is being relocated to the Soapbox Forum

I briefly considered jumping ship. But my rant (unlike the asinine rants of SOME people) actually attracted the correct kind of attention and the SMP bugs got fixed in a fairly timely manner.

So now the G400 runs stably. Which is all I wanted. FPS be damned. There is no game available today that LOOKS NICER on any card other than the G400. So, even if games were my priority, why would I get any other card?

FPS kiddiez will come and go. And anyone who bails on the G400 because it only has 30fps or 50fps or XXfps is a moron. But there are valid reasons to ditch it. There are still professional apps which won't run on it. And if some game comes out which pushes the 3D graphics so hard that the G400 drops below 20fps or so (not bloody likely anytime soon) at 640x480, that's a reason to bail, too.

But the quest for the holy 100fps is a stupid reason. The quest for dual-head that works right under Win2k is another stupid reason (nobody else's single-card solution works, either... and I'm talking SHIPPING cards, not some mythical thing Microsoft announced).

So everybody just relax. Ok? The <insert card's actual name here> will be out when it's out. Until then my G400 will do just fine. The only time I seriously considered ditching it, Matrox came through. That puts them so far ahead of every other manufacturer that it makes my head hurt.

G400 speed is just fine for most games, I know because the V3 2000 I have is the same speed as my previous card, a G400 SH 32MB, and I'm still looking for a good reason to upgrade it. I want to upgrade for the gee whiz factor, I just don't have the software to make it worthwhile.

Oh, for the record, I bought a V3 because it was 95% of a G400 SH 32 in practical functionality and I made $80 CDN on the deal. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif I didn't and don't notice any difference, I never used 32 bit with the G400, or bump mapping anyway. I just swapped cards and continued on, no slowdowns, some new features to play with, extra modes in games, no compatibility issues, it just works. If there was anything to miss it would be the 32MB, if only for the sake of 3DMark2000, games don't seem to care.

That's all from a user perspective, in terms of financial reality, Matrox has to get product out the door, and keep doing so, the race for market share is on, nobody can hide for long. 3dfx is likely to head out of the market, that leaves ATi and NVIDIA are serious contenders. In fact, according to one web site I read, NVIDIA has more market share than ATi now.
