You shall remain nameless. But you know who you are - you evil people who linked a damn popup window to certain threads in the hardware forum. As if "punch the monkey" and "virtual casino" weren't bad enough!

Could you at least point me to one of these threads?

The only thread I've seen recently with anything popping up is some old resurected thread in TSB....

Kruzin,

It used to happen when I'd hit "back" out of "General Hardware" but it doesn't seem to be happening now...strange? It was some kind of pop up add for buying cars or some crap like that. It did happne in a few other threads but it was so random, I couldn't tell you which one.

"Censorship on this forum..." thread.
Some idiot has embedded a picture that is stored on a xxx server.
Whenever you join the thread, it ask for the Username and password to let you see the picture, 'cause you must be a member of the site to have access to its resources.

Ok, it's DEFINITELY one of the ads, since it just popped up when exiting from a thread which only had posts from me, Muad'dib, and Jammrock!

I was just in the Gaming forums and it popped up when I exited the "Game Server Survey" thread. It never loaded, but it opened a window like it was one of those ad things. I closed the ad window and went in and out of the thread, but it never popped back up again. Maybe "Unexplained" is back?

This time I didn't even have to go into a thread. When I opened up the Gaming forum it popped this up in a seperate window. I only had one IE opened at the time, and had not been to any other sites.

[edit] OK I am officially irritated. I was going to drop it but I just went into 3 different threads in TSB and it opened up on every one. I went back to them and it didn't open up. What's the deal??????

The problem is, it is so random I can't figure out what triggers it. I cleared my cache, and tried again but it didn't happen.

I just got the car pop-up ad when entering this thread!

Maybe this is a new GAGames feature.

OK folks, I'm getting worried. I started noticing this pop-up window outside of the MURC as well. I've also noticed it at home and at work. Something weird is going on?

Dave

Pneumatic

I've not seen it anywhere but MURC. But, it seems that lately it has become more prevalant. Could someone have something in their sig that triggers it? If so every thread in which they post would be "infected". We may just have to go on a good old fashioned witch hunt. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

This is going way too far. I just had the "speedyclick" car ad pop up when I went to the GH topic page. And I had a window for "iWin" pop up when I closed a thread. I bet this is GA's fault.

RAB

I'm getting some on-line lottery popping up whenever I leave a thread. It didn't start until today.

It wasn't a password thing, this was an actual add for cars or insurance or something. It just had a mini-van is all I remember (I close them too quick to see the whole thing). I saw it too, in a few threads (I can't remember either). If I see it again I will make a mental note of which thread it was in.

Could y'all let us know what threads you are seeing these things in so we can look into them furthur. So far the only thing I have ran into was the password pop-up that was in the Censorship thread and Ant edited that out.

I tried that. It doesn't work, the ad banners rotate on a "back". Irritating, huh?

I'm really suspicious of the gold Casino On Net banner. I just had the lottery ad pop up, and it was at the top of the forum page at the time.

There's a green Casino On Net banner that sometimes follows.

I haven't seen anything like you guys are describing. I wonder if we have some spyware thing happening - it sees a banner ad on the page and shows you a competing ad (like those register tape coupons at the grocery store).

I'm very anal about what goes on my computer so I'm very careful about what I download. Perhaps a GoZilla kind of thing?

Also, those of you who are seeing these ads, are you running any kind of a firewall? Anything to keep your computer from reaching out to the internet to get these ads, unknown to you?

/edit

I spoke too soon. Upon saving this note, I got a pop-up that tried to go to here: http://ad-adex3.flycast.com/www.iwin.com/adbuy/banner/clicktrack.asp?id=254

the site wasn't found

Still haven't seen anything like this at home or at work. Perhaps something downloaded to your harddrive without you knowing about it. Try www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) for the optout software which kills these spy software.

Gurm

Spyware? Nice thought, but no.

I seriously think it's a rogue script, running from the ad banners. Ant should complain.

If it were consistant to one or two threads it would be pretty easy to figure out what is causing it. The problem is that it seems random. I got it going into (or out of) three straight threads. I went back into the same threads and it didn't pop up again. I thought that it was storing a cookie to tell it not to pop back up in that thread (sounded logical at the time), so I deleted my temp files of all of the cookies. I then went back into the same threads and it didn't pop up again. Later that same night I went into one of the offending threads (Gaming Forum, "Game Server Survey") and, guess what? Yep another ad.

It's hard to track a problem that is so inconsistant. If anyone does figure it out, let me know. I want to advertise with them. Look at how many times their links have been posted in this thread alone. $$$ http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

SteveC

I haven't seen anything like this...but then again, I have never encountered that advert which supposedly has sound....

Perhaps noting which ads it appears with is more useful?

If you see the pop-up when leaving a thread hit back and see which banner was there http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

I haven't seen it at all yet btw...

Liquid Snake

So far, I have not seen any of these ads. I tried going to all the threads that were posted here, no popup ads.

If it was a rogue script more of us should be suffering from this surely. Let's see what Ant says

Greebe

I've only seen it when I have Webwasher turned off while running NS. Havn't seen it running IE (yet). Yes that "reload on back" sucks. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif

Raptor^

Thats interesting, I have never seen the popup ad, and my machine doesn't cycle the ads when I hit back (either that or I got the same 1 lots of times just now http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif)
