We've all gotten used to DDR as the abbreviation for Double Data Rate RAM. However, many of us remember it as the abbreviation for the East German Republic. As someone on USENET pointed out, the use of the word "Zone" also (unintentionally, I'm sure) references East Germany (Soviet Occupation Zone), compounding the issue.
This reminds me of a story I heard about Vicks Vaporub's attempt to "penetrate" the German market without bothering to inquire as to what "Vick" might mean in German.
