  • VIA Welcomes You to East Germany

Those sensitivity training classes at VIA must really be paying off.

We've all gotten used to DDR as the abbreviation for Double Data Rate RAM. However, many of us remember it as the abbreviation for the East German Republic. As someone on USENET pointed out, the use of the word "Zone" also (unintentionally, I'm sure) references East Germany (Soviet Occupation Zone), compounding the issue.

This reminds me of a story I heard about Vicks Vaporub's attempt to "penetrate" the German market without bothering to inquire as to what "Vick" might mean in German.

In any case, here's the page. I hope someone at Siemen's gives them a call.

I don't speak German, but I suspect it means something "obscene", since neither AltaVista, nor Triumvirate, nor Travelang will translate that word from German... or is it simply too colloquial (slang)?

    Interesting.

It's spelled "Fick" and to translate in english you only need to change one letter.

The German "V" sounds sorta like an "F." (More like an FV, although this blend doesn't really exist in English.)

Try an 'u' instead of the 'i'.
That's what Vaporub is all about.

Although I wouldn't advice anyone to rubb Vick anywhere close to it

When I chose to go out
I always leave the light on
when I have to stay in,
you always find me by the phone.

My friends tell me that I'm lucky,
now that I'm living on my own,
and while they've never been more right,
can someone tell me when will love come home?

Jorden is right. Vick's Vaporub should not be placed anywhere near "it."

                        Not that I've tried it.
