View Full Version : The Official MURC Messiest Desk Contest for 1999

ALBPM
13th October 1999, 12:14
Ok Gang, it's time for a real showdown to see who among us has the messiest computer desk.
I unofficially hold the current title according to Hunsow http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

You must post a picture to enter. If you need help or webspace you can email me your pictures and I can post them for you or give you the url so you can write your own comments.

Hey Ant, if you could help moderate and close this thread to entries, let's say at 00:00 GMT, October 20,1999 that would be great... we could then start a new Thread for voting.

Now, the only rule is that you do not deliberately trash your desk out. This must be a representation of the average working conditions of your Computer Desk. I could dump my trash can on my desk before taking the pictures but that isn't what this contest is about. So all potential contestants are under "MURCer's Honor" to give an honest representation of their Desks.

the way you're bathed in light
reminds me of that night
god laid me down into your rose garden of trust
and I was swept away
with nothin' left to say
some helpless fool
yeah I was lost in a swoon of peace
you're all I need to find
so when the time is right
come to me sweetly, come to me
come to me

hmmm... doesn't quite look like a tailormade to me. What kind of papers are those anyway?

Now is this a messiest desk contest (Jordan) or a neatest most organisest desk (ALBPM)contest??

I hope I can find some storage medium for my trusty old POLAROID 600 LAND CAMERA (actually a model 640... the MAX version I suppose). CCD's suck... I'll stick with tried and true, fixed focus optics and precisely controlled in camera developement process for contest quality image. Scanned at 300dpi, of course. A Farmer's digital camera.

I'm the one who'll be hanging out at the coffee-shops getting blitzed... well, maybe he can ship the clip back to me via FedEX, right, Rags?

Alright.. some clarification to these rules.. do the environs of the desk count? My desk reached the critical mass for crap long ago. I would have to include pics of the dining table (avg 2ft depth) buffet (avg 1ft depth) and floor (avg 1.5ft depth). My desk has to have room for me to function here, and I recently "organized" it to accomodate my new computer, but my printer is already buried. I suppose I should take a pic of the back of the desk, but I really don't know if I want to look back there. Sigh.. if only I had room for a scanner, but unfortunately, no desk space!

Alright, to give some idea, Ant has a similar organizational scheme to mine (haphazardly placed software and hardware boxes.. my MAX box is now sitting in approximately the same position as his, atop my printer.. CDs and floppies stacked and scattered, boxes, pens, junk mail, receipts, old lottery tickets, bank statements, odd pieces of paper, stacks of magazines, various unused hardware [2 mice, sparq drive, a floppy drive, many 5 1/4" slide trays, fans, cables of all sorts], socks, books, and other assorted junk are scattered everywhere.) My desk has only the one 19" monitor resting atop a Sept. 1995 issue of Computer Shopper, but is also occupied by 2 cpus (the old one sans cover, with a hard drive resting on top, fans nakedly blowing on it http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif, a Nakamichi R1 audio receiver, Belkin Omniview KVM switch, Saitek Cyborg joystick (hmm maybe I should get another naked fan to continually blow on my joystick too http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif) Panamax surge protector, HP 895cse printer (that side of my desk is continually buried by about a foot of crap), keyboard, mouse, mousepads, wrist rest, and speakers..

In order to get the full effect, you really do need to look through a large number of digital camera shots including my room (sadly, i seem to have lost one of the nice wideangle shots that shows all 3 of my computers, and dont have my digital camera here), but you can see me and a friend of mine building 6 computers from scratch in one day =) http://www.ecotech.com/pics/

but, the best example is probably:
http://www.ecotech.com/pics/PROJE026.jpg
Just imagine that to the immediate right of the large monitor, there's a 24" tower, and a scanner with junk piled all over it, and to the far left there is another monitor up high and another server on the floor.

Hmm, I'd post a pic of my desk if I had a webcam (I keep buying them, then selling them because they need a supernova going off next to them to work) but I can say most of you guys are neat freaks compared to me, and what's with all the wimpy desks? http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

Imagine over 30 envelopes, bills, receipts, etc, most with some notes or handwriting on them, screwdrivers, speakers, rotating CD tray, misc free floating CDs, pliers, joysticks, vcr, 2 monitors, mouse, mic, razor, answering machine, fliers, shipping boxes etc. That's the surface of the desk, underneath is the keyboard on a tray, a subwoofer on the floor, mid tower with side off, a jungle of wires running to all the gear on top of the desk, a scanner, printer and second vcr to the right of the desk, a phone on another desk at the other end of the room with my rear speakers located on it, packing boxes lining the walls, set of bathroom scales, electric heater, boxes that stuff came in. Fireplace with things like circuit board etching acid on the mantle next to deodorant. Tool chest next to one wall, misc shoes and items of clothing. Did I forget the set of weights and the bed in the middle of the room with wires coming from it for an electric blanket? Hmm, I think a pic would be too embarassing. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/smile.gif

I'm sure everyone is busy getting their films developed. I was able to squeeze two photos out of my old Polaroid camera and the quality is .. well .. you be the judge.

jsb gets my vote so far.

KvH: This contest is a great reason to buy a scanner, but you might have to tidy up a bit to make room on your desk ;-)

It's a ATX File server 8*5,2". 2*3,5" and 4 internal 3,5" it is divided internally in to sections, one with the mobo , this part has to 9 cm fans blowing in and one smaller 4,5 cm sucking out. The other part has the hard drives, DAT, DVD and CD-rom, 300w power supply, one 9 cm fan blowing in and one out, plus the fan in the power supply, lots of space and no cooling problems, it's a big ass case on wheels, 376(W)*518(D)*467(H)mm and I love it http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif

I'm voting for Helevitia.. Dave's gotta earn a ton of points for all those condiments shelved over his PC... just speculating on what that's about is worth 2nd place, imo...

P.S. All right, I know they're probably beer bottles, but the blurriness allows me to see them as soy sauce, steak sauce and the like... and I think Dave is much more interesting that way... http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/wink.gif H.

*Whew*. Just got back from Argentina about 5 minutes ago. Anyway, You think a black lite would be cool? It is! I have one aiming at the ceiling cause I glued some of those little plastic fluroscent stars and galaxy thingy's. If I smoked pot I would be able to really trip out with it. And dangit, It WAS clean cause my mom was visitng me and thats the spare bedroom. Hell, most of the equipment was *OFF* for over a week! That is astonishing for me.

And those alt3ec subs are great for all manner of dirty dishes or empty wrappers and such.

BTW Holly,my MOM put my bear in the trash http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/frown.gif Inconsiderate if you ask me. It wasnt even mouldy yet. Anyway, ahm back home, So I'll hopefully post an update on the situation if people are still interested in it.
