  • G400 keeps crashing windows

I got my G400 Max DH last week and I still haven't got it to work well. After some days I tried to reinstall Win98SE and then add the latest G400 drivers. But my machine keeps on crashing...sometimes everything works perfectly...at other times I'm unable to even boot up the system. And as far as I can see there's no IRQ conflicts etc...anyone got any idea how I should fix this?

    My machine:

    - Win98 SE (Swedish)
    - Abit BX6
    - PII 400MHz (OC:ed 266, I've tried it at 266 but the machine crashes anyways..
    - G400 Max DH
    - DirectX 7
    - Realmagic Hollywood Plus (mpeg card)
    - Powerdesk 5.30

At first I ran the AGP-card at 1/1 clock(default setting)..but then I set it to 2/3 and some of the crashes went away.

if the system is set to it's right clock and multiplier and agp at 2/3 is everything fine?

How is your mpeg decoder card attached? Does it link directly on the video card with ribbons? If so this is not supported and will need to be removed.

Have you tried other drivers, such as the 5.25?

Have you tried disabling Bus Mastering in the Matrox drivers?

      1) bad ram
      2) video card not seated properly. It looks like it's in, right? Do it again anyway.
      Once a month I re-seat my g200

        Thanks for the answers!

The system crashes when I'm using the right clock too, so I don't think the problem's due to OC:ing.

I've tried the shipping drivers, the latest from matrox.com...and the 5.30 from matroxusers.com, same results with each.

The mpegcard is not directly connected, it uses vga-cables on the outside.

I'll try disabling busmastering and reseating the card and I'll report the results. BTW, the bad RAM you were talking about Paul, do you mean the computer RAM or the RAM on the G400?

          Damn I'm having the same problem too , Win98SE + G400 max = random crash !
Curently I'm also having problem with Netscape 4.7 every now & then Blue screen of death or pop up with GFP & bunch of codes !
I already check my system IRQ no conflict at all any idea ?? Driver issue or ???

BTW I've been using a G200 before I switch to G400max , the G200 never give me such problem with the same mother board , the only thing I've change is the disaply card & Win98 to Win98 SE .

            First try 5.25. Then....

            The ram...that's a tough question.

Try swapping in new ram or trying only one of your chips in the system could eliminate the dram problem (I've got 3 chips, 64+32+32).
            Maybe it's your cache ram?
