  • on 5ema+ mb g450 will not install under Win 2k or ME

g450 will not install on Win 2k or ME, card is not even recognized! both w2k & me were clean installs on freshly formatted hd. had to wipe me cos of all the problems trying to get this card working.

    sys is:
    soyo 5ema+ mb
    256mb memory
    k-6 III+ cpu @450mz
    8.4 gig western digital hd
    digital research 36x cd-rom
    aopen 12x 10x 32x cdrw
aopen fm56-sm soft pci modem on com3.
bios is enabled for agp 2x.
    win 2000
    directx 8.1a
via 4 in 1 drivers v1.29 [also tried supposed Soyo Matrox Fix, ETEQ414]
    latest MB bios
    latest g450 bios

had previously a g200 agp with no problems

    problem is:
after installing card boot to w2k.
2k does not recognize card in display settings but does recognize new hardware. runs new hardware wizard. attempts to install new driver after usual bs about driver not being certified, etc. during install screen blanks and sys re boots. no power desk or recognization by w2k of card. I than using utility form matrox web site un install drivers. I have tried installing drivers that were with cd that came with card. also have tried installing 5.51 and 5.52 for w2k after of course running un install for drivers.
when checking display:settings:advanced:adapter roperties:resources:cnflicting device list I see the following
    Input/Output Range 03B0 - 03BB used by:
    VIA CPU to AGP Controller
    Input/Output Range 03C0 - 03DF used by:
    VIA CPU to AGP Controller
    Memory Range 000A0000 - 000BFFFF used by:
    VIA CPU to AGP Controller
this is very much starting to look like a mb specific/chipset caused problem. course I really do not know enough to diagnosis and fix problem. there is next to nothing in matrox manual or on web site. what is on soyo site is so useless as to be pathetic.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Well I suppose you can remove those devices (Via Agp to CPu) from the device manager and let it redetect them. Hopefully it will move them somewhere else.
Out of interest how did you go about install the via drivers?

good suggestion but tried. device manager moved them right back on re boot. via 4 in 1's have a install/uninstall package.

Joseph Lanza- Have you tried this install procedure outlined by Tyan (I know that's not who makes your board, but it should work since its the same VIA chipset)?:

        http://www.tyan.com/support/html/f_tr_atx1598.html

        Hope this helps!

Good idea but have been there and done that. Long bout the 2nd re install of w2k. will be trying modified form of that next as per Matrox tech's suggestion.

Bty, currently have my k6-III+ oc to 600mz. 6x100 fsb. [set fsb @100mz, clock mulitiple to 2x] Sys does not so much as hiccup.

Yep, these K6-3+'s are sweet little chips!

I've got mine running only at 500MHz, since I have one helluva busy next 2 weeks with finals and all that.

Once I get home for the summer though, I'll crank it up!

You know, you could also try copying the contents of the AGP directory to the AGP33 directory in the VIA 4-in-1 drivers; choose Yes to overwrite the files when prompted. Then try to install the 4-in-1 drivers. I've heard of that solving some problems for some Super-7 users.

            Good Luck!

            And, Happy K6-ing!

You NEED to install the VIA 4-IN-1 AGP.
Assign an IRQ to your AGP in the bios.
You also NEED the latest bios update.
My G400 worked fine in Windows 2000.

Actually, now that I think about it, this is a known BIOS issue with this board.

If you flash back to an older BIOS, it actually cures this.

You can do a search on the Matrox Forums and you'll turn this up.

Since it works with an older BIOS, and the newer BIOS causes the problem, it's a motherboard BIOS issue.

You need to bug Soyo about it.

                Good luck!

have not bothered with soyo. the 2+ & III+ series of amd cpu's are not offically supported by soyo for their s7 series of mb's.

luckily a system intergrator who has met and solved the same problem with the g400 and a number of 5emh mb's [at version of the 5ema+] has been in contact. seems my best bet is to down flash bios to one that does not "UPDATE AWARD SOURCE CODE". less mb resources used with older bios's.

now if I can find an older soyo bios g450 compatible that still drives w2k pro I'll be all set, I guess. other wise I will be trading the g450 for a radeon ve. will know tormorrow as that is when down flash occurs. I'll report back as time allows.

just down flashed from 1ea1 to 1da1 and all is still not very well. g450 now installs fine on w2k & me. but can not get on net from w2k. seems my aopen software modem now gets put on com 4 instead of com 3. keep getting bounced from juno & net zero. at&t will not even connect. also can not get a jaton isa to install. once had both modems installed in w98 and w2k.

also with 1da1 bios have to escape out during memory check at boot. otherwise memory check keeps repeating. disabling bios memory/parity check option does nothing. will try a down flash to 1ca2. if any problems persist I am going to throw in towel and ship the g450 back and get the radeon ve. life is to short. besides adding insult to injury the g450 is not that much better than the g200 it is replacing. the dual head option is not worth this amount of agravation.
