  • Reactor Critical: G800 Cancelled

Sorry to be the bearer of (potentially) bad news, but...

    http://www.reactorcritical.com/#l710

A week ago tnaw_xtennis discovered a mention about Matrox Millenium G800 in the latest WinNT4 drivers for G400. I`m afraid, I am going to grieve Matrox fans who were looking forward to buy one. We have received information from a very reliable computer hardware source telling that Matrox G800 is abolished or at least left for the better times.

However, in a few weeks after CeBIT Matrox is going to announce G550, a successor of G400/G450. There will be almost no new features, excluding Matrox Skinning (what was already showed at GDC`2000 and Meltdown`2000), Displacement Mapping and a couple of new DualHead capabilities.

Can I get a "doh?" Or maybe a "it's ok Cory, they don't know what they're talking about."

it wouldn't surprise me as well if they published stuff like 'nVidia cancels nv20, and announces GeForce3'

I guess that one falls under the "they don't know what they are talking about" category. One feels somewhat better now.

My question is how can they cancel something that was never announced in the first place?

Erm they say no new features and then give a list of new features

I'd be happy with the new not new features of matrix skinning, disaplacemnt mapping and new DualHead capabilities.

Oh no! The fake, mythical, unannounced card has been cancelled! Shocker! How bad is this?

              Oh look, there's a G550 - that's ok then

Seriously though, the G800 name means nothing, all this suggests is that the next card wont have some of the features we were hoping for...

And even then, we have to trust ReactorCritical

I just hope we see the G400's spiritual successor some time soon, whatever they chose to call it. Real DualHead (TM) and some peppier gaming performance would fit the bill perfectly

                      Hey guys,
from what I've seen, ReactorCritical's hum "reputation" hum is flying VERY low on the hardware news level. Everything about the G550, including what was posted by IXBT, originated from there. So, I say let's wait a few weeks and see what M has been doing the past TWO YEARS; personally, I would be very satisfied by the specs we saw a while ago; Dual-Head, an advanced T&L engine, DDR, 0.13/5/8µ, some kind of HSR like the Radeon or the GeForce 3, even if not advanced as the tilers', and the great stuff Matrox offered in the past: exceptionnal 2D/3D quality, rock-solid drivers (excluding the D3D wrapper) and great technical support... wait! That's already being handled by MURC
The only thing I REALLY want right now is AVAILABILITY

                      Francis,

                        Addendum:

Have you guys read RC's statement carefully???

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WTF, isn't Matrox Skinning (so, a T&L engine...), displacement mapping and new Dual-Head features enough ??? The specs they posted also mentionned 128-bits (256 bits DualBus)DDR, a 360 MHz RAMDAC (so, 2D better than ever), 0.18µ; This card would be faster than a GeForce 2 GTS and MUCH better looking... I don't mind having a fast 3D card which still has sub-GeForce 3 performance, as long as it has a sub-GeForce 3 pricetag... GeForces 3 will begin at $450? So start selling the G550 for $175-250...

If they don't stop saying bad stuff on M (don'T worry, daddy's here ), I'm gonna kick some very critical asses

                          hello all,

if the next processor from Matrox use 128 bits DDR memory the processor will be a truth/full 256 bits.

I hope it will use such memory. But i don't think it will be a hardcord gamer card.

No Barb, it will not be a 256 bits bus, it will be a 2x 128 bits bus: all sounds the same, but it isn't...

the Dual Bus has nothing to do with the external memory, weather it is 128bit SDR , 64bit DDR or 128bit DDR.

The 128 bit dual bus is internal to the Gx00 chip, and how it talks to itself. IE how the Warp engine transfers its data to the 3D core for further processing etc.
