  • Competition view on Matrox

Last week I was on a vacation to England. By a mere coincedence I was invited to watch a soccer game of Galatasaray on a local Turkish resident's home who happened to be one of the founding partners of 3DLabs (makers of Oxygen cards etc.) After some small talk on the graphics card industry and their competitors I asked him how he saw Matrox doing particularly in the gaming market. His response was "As far as we know, they are determined to keep out". That's it folks, competition knows better.

    Bwahahahahahahahaha

What a bunch of "competition knows better" BS!

I've gotta second Greebe on this one, not because I know anything, but because of common sense. 3DLabs makes, as you pointed out, the famed Oxygen boards. They are all high end OpenGL CAD boards. They don't make any workstation (with a small w) class cards, they only make Workstation (with a capital W) card, and certainly not any gaming cards. What on earth makes you think that this exec has any idea what the heck he is talking about?

Anyway, thats my .02$ on the matter.

At least I know, what I'm talking 'bout ...

I had a FireGL 1000, GVX1 & GVX 210, while the latter is their attempt to support two monitors with one card.

All were ok in visual quality and support for serious OpenGL, but their drivers where not up to par, ie. the GVX210 drivers just called for Doc Watson, as soon as I wanted to change resoltuions, using their pre-defined settings ... d'oh !

Oh yeah and Q2 ran in stellar 40fps or something in 1024x768x24bpp ... kick äss !

Ok folks Ok .. next time I happen to meet a exec from Gfx Cards industry, I will make sure he is from a respectable company, maker of great gaming cards etc. etc.

Com'on these guys earn their bread from predicting customer needs and understanding technology. If being one of the founders of a NASDAQ quoted $500MM company is not impressive enough for you I just shut up !

It's just that the situation here has reached the point where people are posting false rumours (and images, right az?) everywhere so you cannot expect everyone to believe you.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

didn´t 3dlabs made the permedia chip that was used in creative labs 3dblaster? that was before the voodoo chip was released.
This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.
