Sometimes new software will install things that sit in the bottom tray of Windows, eating up resources even though they don't appear to be running (the ones that show up on the right hand side of the tray). Also, a large file used as wallpaper can eat up a substantial amount of video memory, as well.

Any programs in the 'startup' program group will also cause resources to be swallowed up.
