  • New streaming format needs help

There is interest in a new streaming format to compete with ASF/WinDOS Media. First there is a small group working on a format for the two new Be OS's:

    https://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=1851

And second, theres a huge discussion at Slashdot right now:

Anyone here know anything about this topic and want to help out?

I wouldn't worry. Any solution that becomes standard is bound to be MPEG -- which is generally what ASF is based on anyway. MPEG2 is already standard in digital broadcasting, apparently something called MPEG2000 is on tthe way (eeek ... sounds like a Microsoft naming convention!!)

Well, 'worry' is something that AltOS people should be having.

Sure, ASF is based on MPEG (4, actually), but currently no media player for Linux or Be can play them, and there are no streaming MPEG formats (open standard MPEG, not ASF MPEG).

Thus this team are trying to do just that: design a wrapper for a (what may be an MPEG derivative) streaming format.
