  • G400s can't handle Hardware Motion Compensation in WinDVD?

Is it true that Matrox G400 cards do not support Hardware Motion Compensation in WinDVD 2000?

I look forward to receiving replies soon.

That's right ... nor in any OS or player for that matter. You're referring to iDCT?

I was wondering why there was a check mark for this while the InterVideo's site says it didn't support Matrox cards for hardware motion compensation.

Here's the URL: http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/Faq.jsp?mode=Chipset#hwmc about the IDCT, HDC, and compatibility list.

Has anyone accidently have this checked and had any problems with WinDVD?

      Thanks!

If you check the box, and your hw doesn't support it, it will ignore your request.

Hmm... I wonder why WinDVD likes to lock up my computer or cause blue screen of death rarely. PowerDVD is fine for me. Hmm! That's a different story.

AFAIK, PowerDVD 3 doesn't let me enable hardware support. I am going to try to test WinDVD with the hardware support. Maybe this was the source of all problems. I will keep you guys posted.

            Thanks!

don't try to enable Hardware Motion compensation or iDTC on an software player with the G400... it just doesn't support those functions.

Matrox decided not to spend resources on developing them, because their view on this is that current processors can decode MPEG2 in software without any trouble, and that the resource that would be needed for hardware implementation of these features are better spent on other things.

While in general I agree on this with them, I do have some questions about why almost _all_ other graphic chips have at least hardware motion comp. built in. Can I conclude it may not require that much work to implement hardware MC?

And a reduced CPU load when outputting a DVD movie to TV/2nd monitor through DVDMAX would improve the working speed on the primary monitor, as well as the work done on the primary monitor would less likely influence the fluency of the DVD playback on the tv.

Thanks for the information, guys! I will see if WinDVD still crashes with BSoDs and computer lock ups with unchecked option (for hardware).
