Bad sound while recording on tape

I have a Marvel G400 TV and almost everything works fine, except the
recording of an edited clip back to the VCR. In this case the sound on the
resulting tape is really poor.
When watching the clip on the PC the sound is fine. Also, the sound of the
VCR works fine with recording from the antenna.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
What might be wrong with my setup?

I'd suggest asking this question in the Desktop Video forum. That's where all the Marvel/RRG/editing folks hang out...
