  • G400 32meg SH or G450 or ???

Well I have been coming here for a little while and have been trying to soak up all the wonderfull knowledge that passes through these forums and now I want to ask a Question. I have a Athlon 700 with asus K7V, 256megs of Ram, a Samsung 900NF monitor etc.. Running Windows 2000 Pro. My Video Card is a G200... I am gonna get a new card fairly soon and was wondering what the recommendations are.. I am big into photo editing but would like to play games without many Problems... I was thinking about a G400 32meg single head (cause I doubt I would use the other head, not too mention I hear it is not really supported under Win2K anyhow)or The G450... Or dare I say it..... Should I wait for a little while longer??? What is the consensus??? Thanks.
    Current System:

    Iomega 250 Zip,
    Trusty G-200 :-)

Go fore the G400max or the G450!

G400 SH 32mb would be perfect for you, when o/c'd a little, it'll play most games at good refresh rates

Yes, and remeber that normal G400 is a little faster than G450 because G450 has only 64bit bus DDR instead of 128 one!

Thanks for the prompt replies and Now I have yet another question.

So the G400 (non max version) is also faster than the G450??? Also how well is the G400 Supported Under Win2000?

IMHO 32MB boards have a noticeable difference compared to 16MB ones even in D3D games! If you want play games without any sort of problems my advice is to buy a G400 with 32MB video RAM!

It´s not a question of problems, it´s a question of how much texture memory you´ll be needing. I own a 16Mb version and I never had a single problem with the G400. It´s just that I do not go over 1024x768 resolution both in Windows and gaming because of my 17" monitor... so, the extra 16Mb was not worth paying for...

Today, however, I would advise buying the 32Mb version, because the games are becoming more demanding.

                        About performance ...

My OCed G450 is not even close to my former MAXed Vanilla, i.e. on my G400 I was able to get +3300 3D Marks where my G450 peaks out a little above 2700 3D Marks (when using the default benchmark).

Must be the bus holding back performance, cos 16bpp is pretty fast compared to 32bpp on my G450.

So my recommendation would be that you get a Vanilla (SH or DH, depending on your budget) and OC that to MAX speeds ...

                        Cheers,
                        Maggi

PS: Of course you could also wait for Matrox' next card ...

so is the extra $50 worth it for the G400 max over the G450?
