  • g400 Dualhead

I have owned a Millennium for a couple of years and it's a great card . So now that I am going to get myself a new PC, I am thinking about a g400 Dualhead 32 MB. My questions are:
    - When I use 2 RGB monitors for DualHead Multi-Display (Double my desktop), can I reach a 90 or even 100 Hz refresh @ 1152x864 on each of the two displays?
    - Can I accomplish this under NT4 and W2k?
    - I know most of you are enthousiastic about it, but do I REALLY get stotterless DVD playback and no framedrops (I'll have a 900 MHz T-bird), in other words: does it REALLY match a stand-alone DVD-player?

    Greetz,

    DualHead:

    1st display: up to 2048x1536 @ 85hz
    2nd display: up to 1280x1024 @ 75hz

more is not possible because both displays use the same ramdac. only the g450 has an own ramdac fpr the 2nd display and can go higher (don't know exact numbers)
    my system:

    AMD XP 2000+
    Abit KTA7 (VIA 4.49)
    512MB SDRAM133
    Matrox Millennium G400 MAX (5.91, AGP 2x)
    Windows XP Prof

The G450 will do upto 150hz refresh on the second head at that resolution. I don't think it's possible under Win2K tho.(need some Win2K gooroo's over here)
DVD playback on the G4x0 graphics cards are simply sweet.

"more is not possible because both displays use the same ramdac."

Actually, G400 has a second RAMDAC...it's just not integrated onto the main chip like G450. G400's second RAMDAC is built on the Maven chip that drives the second head. The refresh/res limitation is because that second RAMDAC is not fast enough for higher res/refresh rates.

So using 2x21 inch monitors is out of question (that is I work in 1280 on 91Hz... 75 is not satisfactory for me... and 1280 is not satisfactory on 21 inches) ?

What other matrox card could I get?
Also, maybe a good idea is to use millenium II i have in our very old linux server... It could be a good idea since I am using W2K. What is Mill II capable of?

            G450
            Aspect ratio 4:3
            1600x1200 primary 130Hz, secondary 107Hz
            1280x960 primary 130Hz, secondary 120Hz

            Aspect ratio 16:9
            1600x1024 primary 130Hz, secondary 90Hz
            1280x720 primary 130Hz, secondary 110Hz.

Under Win2K both heads must be set to the same res due to an unresolved issue with that OS. I've run mine at 3200x1200 effective resolution.

So if I get this right, the g450 actually IS a significantly better performing card than the g400 as far as refresh rate is concerned. I definitely have to have it now!
I want to run NT4, probably Win2k and - only for Miro DC10+ - W98. Will the g450 run at all these OS's without problems?
