  • avi data rate limit using .mp3 audio?

    Hey all,

I have had this problem a while now, and everytime windows comes out with any sort of update it nevers seems to fix this problem.

When I try to create a video file with audio using avi or even asf, one of the options for audio compression is mpeg layer 3, but it has a limit of 56kbps at 24khz. Am I the only one who thinks this level of sound quality os a joke?

The funny thing is, you can use whatever bitrate you want as long as you make the file an mpg, but any sort of avi or asf will hit this mp3 bitrate "ceiling" for some reason.

Do I need an updated codec or something?

I think that's a limit imposed by the Windows-supplied Fraunhofer IIS .mp3 encoder (the one that handles .wav and apparently .asf files, too). I've seen it in every program that doesn't use a custom encoder (like the Blade encoder). How stupid...

The reason it doesn't apply to MPEG's is probably because you're not using the Fraunhofer encoder for those-- you're using a real MPEG encoder.
