  • Major Problems.

    Hey Peoples,

When i got my new computer and was trying to install the Matrox Drivers they keep conflicting with My Sound Blaster !live. I have a Matrox G400 Duel Head 32 meg. It kept coming up with errors, but after much stuffing around got it to work. Now when i am playing games like Quake3 Arena it locks up and freezes, and then i can only hear sound.

Would someone please be able to tell me how to fix this as it is really starting to pee me off

Could you give us a little bit more info? Like complete machine specs, the OS you use and how your IRQs look like?

How to do the latter you can find here.

It might be your IRQs are conflicting, or something is using an IRQ it shouldn't be using.

    Computers are strange things

        Alexhhy,
have you tried moving your NIC card to another slot? If I remember correctly 2 is unshared,3 shares with 6 &4 with 5.

Hey guys don't feel too bad , my G400 dual head causes windows98se to crash if I try to shut down or restart the computer, an dall I have installed is the G400, I think this card belongs in the trash if you ask me.

alexhhy, disable the SB16 emulation in the Device Manager if you are not playing DOS based games.

UH!!OH!! Free Beer on IRQ 9!!!!!

Also if you are not using USB disable that in Device Manager as well.

The SB live may move to IRQ 5 then, leaving the NIC on 10 by itself if USB is disabled.

Gordo, what mobo are you using???? Also reseat the G400 and make sure that the ends of the card are not lifted out of the AGP slot when you tighten the bracket screw.

            Paul

Dunno Jord - I had the same problem as Gordo. I had a totally clean install of Win98SE and as soon as I installed the Matrox drivers, my computer wouldn't shut down. At least with my computer, it was definately something with the 5.3 drivers. I'm now running the 5.41 drivers (too scared to try anything newer... ) and have had no shutdown problems at all.

I would suggest trying a different (earlier) version of PD and updating your AGP drivers if you're using a VIA board.

Jorden - you seem a little cranky today... turn that upside-down!

If I recall correctly(and thats not garaunteed), the Win98SE Shutdown problem is a documented bug with 98SE itself and it's flawed power management capabilities. Go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download the 98SE shutdown patch and see if that fixes the problem. That should do it. I've had the problem that you are describing on every computer that I've ever installed 98SE on before, no matter what the video card.

The shutdown patch didn't help me. For what it's worth, I haven't heard of that patch actually helping anyone with the shutdown problem...

                      Touché Andy

I was at work at that moment and just thought "wth, you just say that it's all because of your G400, yet you only have 2 posts... that's a bit cruel."

I haven't seen him ask us for help. And now we're offering him help. Let's just see if he takes it, okay?

                        Hmmz, this looks like a problem I've had, and @1st, I blamed my G400. I'm using Win98SE and I have a Abit BH6 MB.
After a clean install, the system works fine, but after I install the drivers and DX, the system hangs.
I got myself a spare vidcard (i740), an encountered the same problems.

Then I borrowed a POST-tester, which pointed out that my cache was fried due to bad earthing(I live in a very old house, and I don't have an earthed wallsocket), and that caused all my problems.
Since my wallet is a bit thin, I didn't replace my board yet, but disabled the MB-cache, and the system works... for now.

Take this for the English lesson it's intended to be... the term is 'grounded' outlet, not 'earthed'.

My GF is Bulgarian and her parents speak very good English, but every once in a while, they translate something literally and it cracks me up.

Example: one-of-a-kind translates from Bulgarian as "alone in the world".

My last apartment was 100+ years old. The girls above me decided to have a treadmill in their apt. They would turn it on and everything in the building would go very dim. I went out 10 minutes after that happened the first time and bought a line conditioner/UPS.

Gordo, it's very easy to blame your G400, when it might be your Windows98 SE as well. Did you ever try to disable the Windows Fast Shutdown and see if that helps?

How to do that? Do a search in the FAQs forum.

There's even the small possibility that your problem is due to something with the motherboard BIOS, the AGP Aperture size setting, how you setup your Windows, some program you installed lately or uninstalled and it left remnants that are now screwing up your Windows. But you just go ahead and blame it on your G400, as it's the only card you have in your PC... Sure.

You could ask us for help as well. But that would be too much, would it?

                            Jord.
