  • is it the ALi?

I know that the G400 has problems with the VIA chipsets. I have also heard that this is also true with ALi chipsets. Is this true?
I have one of these chipsets and my G400 is bugged with problems and i want to find the root of the problem.
    Cheers

My G400 is working fine in an Iwill XA100plus motherboard which uses the ALi Aladdin V chipset. I assume it's a SS7 board you are trying to use it with?

I have my G400 working fine on an Asus P5A. Be sure to install the ALi AGP 1.65 driver for Win98.

        Wibble,

If you are having problems with your G400, you need to give more specific information. You need to tell us what kind of Motherboard your have, Driver versions, BIOS versions, etc...

I have an Asus P5A(ALI chipset) and have no problems at all. Let us know what's going on so we can help you out.

        Thanks,

        Dave

At this Ali site you can read up on your chipset.

As you already said, you have a K6-2, meaning you have a Super Socket 7, which gives alot of problems.

Please do find the exact Giga-Byte mobo, as we might find the latest BIOS for it then, for the BIOS version you mentioned isn't what we were looking for. The one you gave is the general BIOS ROM version, which can't be programmed. (I for one have the Award Bios 4.51 on my Asus P2B, but I'm running version 10.12)

Just a quick thought, or should that be question?

Are you using the latest AGP drivers for you motherboard? If so you may still want to try and reinstall them.

Oops, sorry just reread you posts.

Try and reinstall you AGP drivers.

One last thing. What is your bios version for you motherboard. You responded with the bios version for your Matrox card, not the mb version.

Wibble, I had a problem with my G400 MAX in my ss7 system. I was a contender for the patience award with all the problems I had.... I had the EXACT same chipset as you. For starters, make sure you have forced AGP 1x. I could only get mine working with that. Force it in the G400's section of the registry (use the reghacks found on this site), AND with the ALi program too. It turns out that I couldn't run it with simply the G400 forced (not quite sure why it didn't work). Try using PDesk 5.30. That was the only one that worked for me. Post back when you've tried that. I think I still have the files, so if you can't find them, let me know and I can send them.

                        Dimitri

P.S.: ss7's are a bitch to get this card working (in my experience at least), but stick with it. It's a great card and will make you happy....

Good pointers Dune guy. I would have to agree with the Powerdesk version. I had no luck with anything newer than 5.30.

Well before i read your reply i spent hours figuring ou tsolutions.
Eventuall i removed all drivers inc AGP and IDE. Then i did a manual uninstalie, removed things from registry. Anyways, i installed pd 5.53 and it works fine now, doesnt crash or nothing. If it does i will take your advice and install v5.30. I already downloaded it just in case
                            Cheers
