  • 4 meg Apeture problem with Win2k and G400

Well I have Win2k (2195) working well with my system all drivers installed during setup. only problem I had was that after installing the 5.03 or 5.01 drivers all I would get was a black screen. I tried everything I could and finally found that the only was to fix it was to set my Apeture in the bios to 4 megs. Anyone else have this problem or have another solution? My pc is set to standard pc (not ACPI) and I have a FIC PA-2013 rev 2.0 running a bios which FIC tech support sent me. They said that it was the best one to have for win2k. Is the problem solely the motherboards fault? Or does it have something to do with the still unfinished Matrox drivers? Thx. Jediphoenix

I have a FIC VA-503+, and have the same problem. When I had 256MB Apeture I would get a black screen in Windows 2000. I thought I would try all BIOS settings to try to solve the problem, but the first one I tried (4MB Apeture size) fixed the problem. I don't have any problems playing games in either Windows 98 or Windows 2000. I haven't noticed any performance problems, but I haven't tried TurboGL (have no OpenGL game).
The newest Windows 2000 compatible BIOS FIC sent me messed up my COM ports in Win2K, so I'm running JE1537.

I think FIC is the problem here. Rags and I have Win2K running and don't have a problem. My aperature is set to 256 megs. How much mem do you have installed?

My Win2k is running great as well (thxs to a bit of Gurm's help). AGP apeture is at 256. Perhaps the VIA board is the problem.

It's the mobo. Open the Drivers.cab in your \\winnt directory and take out CPQAGP.SYS or something like that. Drop to dos and replace VIAAGP.SYS with the new CPQAGP.SYS. That MIGHT work. Your probably going to have to wait for a bios update or new bobo drivers.

I've a g400 dual head on a p2b-f (bios version 1010) 128 mbyte ram.... someone know how can i resolve this problem???'

                  Please help me...

Well FIC is sending me a rev 2.1 of the pa-2013 to replace my 2.0. I talked to their tech support on the phone and they said that they never tested the refv 2.0 board with any of the 32 meg cards and they never tested it with win2000 yet. But they have tested the 2.1 version and it worked perfect with the g400 32 meg and windows 2000. They are switching them for free so it cant hurt, I will update ya to see if it changes anything. jediphoenix

                      To dflatline:

I'm currently running W2K on a P2B-F with my G400 and AGP aperture size set to 256MB ever since. It worked with RC3 and now it does with the final build. BIOS version of the mobo is 1012 final now, has been 1011 upon install. I have 1GB of RAM now and before it has been 512MB. Never failed neither using the ACPI HAL nor with the APM HAL. Currently I'm using 1152x864x32Bit on it.
System is not overclocked but works also when overclocking it to higher FSB speeds as long as the RAM and my SCSI controllers can handle it.
Maybe you should go for the BIOS update first and then reinstall W2K final with the 5.03 drivers.

well just to update you I just finished installing my new pa-2013 rev 2.1 (the one that FIC says supports 32 meg cards and works fine with win2000 and I still cant raise my apeture size any higher than 4 megs without getting a black screen with my G400. Now I did not format the HD and freshly install win2k after i switched mobos, should I ? Eaves
