  • Strange Windows 2000 2D problem

Are there other people here who have the following problem with an Athlon on a Asus K7M:

After working some time in 2D under Windows 2000 with the latest drivers, the screen gets corrupted. Going to the fullscreen command prompt and back again fixes the problem. But after a few minutes the same thing happens, on a regulary basis.

I don't use 3D or a game because they simply crash. Just programming under Windows 2000 using Microsoft Visual Studio 98. I only have this problem under Windows 2000, not Windows 98 SE.

Might be a simple Power Supply issue.
    Scotty, gimme the power:

I recently upgraded from a 250W to a 300W supply. As the problem doesn't occur under Windows 98 SE, I don't think it's a power problem at all.

It's a chipset issue, a lot of people are having problems with non-intel chipsets on w2k.

franksch3 is your K7M Super-Bypass capable and do you have it enabled?

Previously I had a K7M (with a faulty Slot A connector ). But I didn't attempt to install Win2K, I could hardly get it to run. However, I do know that I had to perform a Registry Hack to force AGP 2X. Or I would get what's someone here dubbed "plaid death" on cold boot. Do you have AGP enabled? I ask because this sounds like a Direct Draw issue of sorts. I'm not even sure if there is an AGP miniport driver available for Win2K to use with this board. So I'm afraid I'll have to do some "digging around".

I'll try to get back and post soon.

Well, Asus is very "slim on drivers" specifically designed for this boards combination of chipsets. I think there is some stuff at the Asus DE FTP site. But I didn't check. VIA has "USB filter" for Win2K. You might see if that has any effect. MSI has a special "inf" file for Win2K (to help it properly identify the chipset), but since the K7 Pro uses the AMD 756 South Bridge it would most likely cause problems. The only other "likely" suspect could be the RAM. Or, shudder to think, the motherboard itself may have an intermittant power regulation problem.

You could try posting at the K7M Forum, here > http://www.k7m.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi . Just to see if you can find other users with a similar issue. Sorry I couldn't help more!
