  • Can the G400 really handle 89MHz AGP?

    I want my next system to be an overclocked BX with a 600MHz Coppermine @ 800MHz. However, this causes the AGP bus to run at 89MHz. (Full-of-bull) Tom said in his AGP overclocking article the G400 failed to run. Others here say Tom is, as often, full of it.

    However, I read comments of other people who didn't get it to work properly. What is the truth, and which version of the G400 runs most reliably @ 89MHz AGP? My guess would be not the MAX since that one is already overclocked. But hey, I don't know, I didn't try it. Also is it possible to clock the G400 down with some tweaking utility so the net speed would be 66MHz and do these utilities run under Win2K as well?

    One tip: Chaintech is about to release a new motherboard, the 6BJM, which has been specifically designed for 133MHz FSB overclocking, check it out at www.chaintech.com.tw
    When I have it I'll tell you if that's the one you should get.

    Well as seen in here there are alot of users that have had success with getting 89Mhz AGP stable with their G400's...
    As with all O/C'ing it's the luck of the draw, I'd say Most G400's do the 133FSB without too much problems, I'm sure there are some that won't go (very few IMO)

    As for slowing the G400 down, No, you cannot slow the G400 in order to make it more stable in a High Mhz setting...
    All you can do it switch between AGP2x and AGP1x transfers, which the driver should do automatically...

    I would have no problem recomending the G400 for stable operation at 133Mhz, though just be aware that there is NO guaranty of success...
    There isn't much difference between the 2 flavors of G400's, the only difference is the Chip and Memory Mhz, other than that they are the same...

      Intel's next chipset, the i815, is likely to be a BX with just a few more goodies : AGP4x, 1/2 AGP divider...
      So I would advise you to get a good but not too expensive BX board (for example, choose one without UDMA66 support), and try your overclocking.
      If you don't succeed, run with a little less speed (124 or 112 FSB), and wait for the i815.

        It also depends on the motherboard, RAM, etc. I've hard problems getting my Max to be stable with two 128MB sticks of PC133. I had to retard the RAM from 3-2-2 (3 being CAS to RAS) to 3-3-3, both at 133mhz. My guess is it's really a motherboard issue.

          Many people seem to be quite able to achieve such high AGP speeds. But of all the G400s that I've tried (some 4 or 5) none worked as high as 89MHz with AGP 2x enabled. On the other hand with 1x all worked fine.
          Asus A7V, Duron 600@900, 192MB PC133@100, G200, Guillemot MUSE, etc.

              Recently put a G400 16MB DH in an older Abit BH6 MOBO along with a 600e Coppermine running at 6x133@800.

              Everything runs really stable with 89mhz agp and OC'd G400.

              Good luck.

              PS. Get a Golden ORB for cooling.

                Well I'm forcing 2x at 147mhz fsb X 2/3,so I think thats 98mhz for the g400 ,rock solid unreal for hours ,prime 95 + 2dmark 2000 looping for hours ..I guess Im lucky ..I did kick the sdram volts to 3.7 and I have a fan on the g400...so maby Its not luck ..Btw what are the chances of roasting my ram or agp card with the overvolt Im doing ???

                  I also had my G400max running fine at 89mhz at agp-2x. Its on an abit bx6r2 with a p3-550e fcpga running at 733mhz.

                  Every test and game ran fine, Except for Freespace-2. I don't know what kind of graphic sizes it throws out, but it knocked it down to agp-1x.

                  So for now I am running at 129fsb for 710mhz and everything is rock solid at agp-2x.

                  I am waiting for one of the new 815 chipset boards myself.
