  • AGP bus speed

Interesting thing. I used SoftFSB to overclock my celeron from 366 to 550. I thought the AGP divider would have changed too. But it's still 1/1, guess I'd have to change the jumpers to properly set it. Any long term problems running at 100mhz for a G400?

If you're worried about frying your board, I don't think this is an issue with an overclocked AGP slot. It's the short-term problems that'll get you.

At 89 MHz, I've had problems with both a G400 and a TNT2U: lockups mostly and some instability in Windows. In both cases, the issues were resolved by forcing AGP 1x.

I'd still clock your AGP slot down to 89 MHz, although it sounds like your board is handling the 100 MHz well.

I'm not sure why, but 100agp at 100fsb is much easier than 100agp at 150fsb. My machine ran 3dmark2000 at the former setting, but never at the latter.

Paul, what motherboard do you use? What voltage does it supply to 3.3v? Any way you can raise it to 3.5v? That's what my Soyo provides by default, and that may be why I've had no problems at 89.

3.29 and I don't think I can raise it. I'm using an AOpen AX6BC Pro II. It's a particularly stable motherboard.

I had to up my CPU voltage 1.70 to get my PIII 600E to boot into Windows and 1.75 to get it to run 3DMark2000. Also, it didn't run right away. I ran a couple of SETI clients for a day and then it stopped crashing to the desktop.

Sounds to me like you may have a power supply or motherboard issue. That board certainly has been reviewed well, but yours could still have problems. Sounds like both the CPU and G400 aren't getting the voltage they need, either in terms of level or consistency.

My 500e runs fine at 750 with 1.61v. I don't run it there because the AGP can't handle it and I like a nice big cushion. But I've used the internet or Word for hours at 750 with no problem just to test it, and with those apps it passed.

Since both the CPU and G400 seem to have stability issues on your system, and I find it hard to believe you got bad examples of both, I'd look for a common source, the voltage they're getting.

The main risk of running G400 at high AGP bus speed is ...loosing the BIOS. Feel warned!!!

Now you tell me! Actually, I didn't lose mine till 105. Curiousity got the best of me, I never intended to run it there. Still, very thankful I had made an emergency disk right after installing the card. As I posted after this experience, everyone should have one of these.

Maybe you guys arent running 3dapps yet, its almost always fine in desktop.1/1 isnt real, I still don't believe that anyways. For those people who are running 1/1 check it somewhere else to see if its not running agp1x already. Force agp2x and try running some high powered rounds of q3a, that always stresses machines like bitches. After your computer crashes, set it back to 2/3, run some q3a at ag2x, and you will see that your not crashing anymore.

You can settle down, Zyn. If you read my posts you'd see that I was only running 1:1 as an experiment, to see if the Max would handle 100mhz AGP better at 100fsb than 150fsb. The conclusion of the experiment was that it did. AGP was 2x, sideband was enabled.

I don't have Q3. I ran 3dmark2000, which tends to stress the graphics system pretty well. There is, for example, the test that uses 64MB of textures. So I suspect the AGP bus was used.

The only time my machine defaulted to 1x was when I then tried 105, which blew out the BIOS. Since then I've been back to 2:3. Never intended to run 1:1 on a daily basis, especially since I run my fsb at 133.

But I've run quite a few tests at 144/96, also 2x with sideband, and when it runs at that speed it runs well. Ran 3dmark2000 four times in a row the other day at 144, including one run at 1600x1200x32. If that didn't stress the card, I don't know what will. Let's just say the image was quite dark--probably because AGP was being used very heavily and the card was in way over its head. 1280x1024x32 looked fine, though.
