  • How to distinguish G400 Max from regular G400

    Hello,

I have purchased my G400 Max just half an hour ago. When I have come back home I have seen that the retail box says G400 and 300 MHz RAMDAC. I have phoned the company and they say the sticker on the box which says

G4+MMDH4A32GR states that this box contains a G400Max regardless of the packing. Is there anyway I can look at the BOARD to distinguish the Max from the regular G400.

    Urgent help needed !

    Thanks

The G400 MAX has a small heatsink/fan unit attached to the chip.

The 'vanilla' G400 has a large heatsink only.

      Many ways:

      1. Fan on heatsink
      2. 5ns RAM (the serial number on the RAM ends in -5)
      3. 360mhz RAMDAC in Display Properties
      4. 150/200/150mhz default settings in MGA Tweak, if you install that
      5. And so on...

Thanks for the speedy response !

Yes it has a miniature fan (smaller then a 486 fan actually) so it is a G400Max.

Shame on you Matrox for shipping in wrong packages ! I almost had a heart attack !

My board is manufactured in Thailand. Is that good or bad, can I overclock this beast ?

        Thanks

        Mystique/G200 .. now comes G400Max !

Yeah, forgot to mention the RAM difference, whoops

You could always plug it in and install the drivers, Powerdesk will identify which card it is.

I will do that tonight, but the Chip timing tip was excellent. I also purchased a G400 32 (Single Head) and its chips are labeled as -6 timings mine is -5. I am grateful to you friends.

This is weird. Yesterday, someone posted almost the same question. However, he ordered a vanilla G400, and when he opened the box, it appeared he had a Max: fan, RAM, software reporting Max specs, etc.

Of course, if it looks, feels, smells, and tastes like dynamite, it probably is dynamite. And it was.

Max's being shipped as Max's in vanilla boxes. Max's being shipped as vanillas in vanilla boxes.

              Who's minding the store?
