  • Is the Max better for the P!!! or the Athlon

Does anyone know if the G400s drivers are "tuned" better for the P!!!s or the Athlon? I'm looking at a processor upgrade and was wondering if there was any real reasons to go with P!!!. I am thinking Athlon because it has more raw floating point power and is an all around better CPU. (and its a bit cheaper than the P!!!s right now too) But I'm not sure, I might be missing something.

And I am also wait for an Athlon Mobo with the KX133 chipset on it. So I have faster RAM and bus. (Probably a better chip than the 750 too)

    Thanks all

I don't think that the drivers are directly tuned one way or the other. The original version of the TurboGL (mini openGL for Quake + a few games) only worked with the Athlons and P3s because they used 3DNow!/SSE.

The Athlon is better, IMHO. One thing is undeniable: avoid everything i820 based. The new p3 cu-mines are mostly stable, but they are still finding new bugs in it.

I've got an Athlon with an Asus K7M. The only problem that I had is that I had to install the forceagp2x registry hack. Once I did that, beautiful beautiful beautiful!

It's well documented that G400s like faster CPUs. I've been running my MAX on an OC'd P-III 500 @ 620 and it's ok. But, for "my money", I'm making the jump to Athlon Power next week. The 650s are now in range for me. Who knows how high it will run, but that's part of the fun.
I'll build another system with the old P-III and motherboard. Only down side is I'll have to spring for another G400. That means I'll have to work! ;-)
