  • Is the G400 MAX Fan temperature dependent ??

    hi forum,

today I opened my computer case and I saw
that the fan of my G400 MAX doesn't run !!
When I builded my system, I remember that
the fan run, when I turned on the system,
    but I'm not sure !!

now, does anyone of you know if the fan only runs, when a certain temperature has been
    reached ??

I hope my G400 MAX will survive this,
until I have a response from you :-)

    thanks for any suggestions...

It should be running all the time. Sounds like your fan died (it aint the first).
You can contact Matrox to RMA your card, or you can add your own fan...

thanks kruzin for your fast response !!

but, 5 minutes ago I tried if the the fan
does work alone, and it does !!!

I think there is a bigger problem...

It's a darned shame those fans are dying so often... Let's just hope that some Joe Customer doesn't buy a preconfigured machine with a MAX inside, and the MAX goes !puff! right after his warranty goes void. That would really suck, and I can tell you that little Joe would never again buy a Matrox product...
People at Matrox could really stop being so cheap and install a proper fan on top of their "flagship" product. It would really suck that people react to the name Matrox like "Bwah... it's those darned cards that never work."
Think Matrox could pick up their act on that one...

Even if the fan does go on the MAX I think it'll be okay unless it's overclocked. I have my std 32mb dh without a fan and it's set at max settings and okey dokey so a card designed for the higher speed as std will be fine without the fan.

          Just my 1.5 english pence.

Yea, birdy, but the heatsink on a Max is about 1/2 the size of the one on the vanilla. A Max would get mighty hot without the fan...

I have a max and am also worried about the fan.

I feel that I have to open my case and check the fan once a week to see if it is still working. (it is)

I would be happier if I could replace the 'cheap' fan that came with the MAX with an "excellent' fan that the Max really deserves.

Does anybody have any suggestions on ways to replace the factory fan. Something that is relatively 'easy'to do.

              Thanks

Grant, If you really are interested in a replacement cooler for the G400MAX you could check out -> http://www.tennmax.com/BGA_cooler_guide.htm They have something that should work. I was actually considering getting one of these units as a backup. But I haven't done that yet, though I have one like this on the V3 in my second system. I don't know of any other company that offers "after-market" graphics card coolers.

It seems that the secret today is not to use better processes but to add fans to everything. First the processors, then the hard drives, now the video cards...

I personally don't want too many mechanical devices in my computer because they tend to fail at some point.

Just an aside, but: Before you go changing your fan - whether its because you feel it is inadequate or it just died - you might want to check to ensure you are not voiding your warranty by doing so...

Also, check to make sure that the little white fan plug is seated well. The fan on my MAX was not working when I got the card, but the problem was just that the plug was not fully inserted. No problems after fixing it.
I don't think the fan on my MAX is a cheap one, have they changed fans?

If the fan "alone" is working,it is probably rubbing against the heatsink, causing the fan not to spin, loosin it up a bit,and make sure the fan spins freely.might not be your solution, but I've seen it and done it myself.

                          Hi everyone

                          Thanks for your help!

I will just keep checking the Fan once a week to see if it is still working, and try adjusting the position of the Fan if it stops.

I do not want to void my warranty
