  • G400 Newbie Needs help

    Hello All!

I recenly purchased and installed a G400 Max in my PC. I have a PII 350 w/ 64 MEGS of Ram.

Upon startup I experienced major problems - the PC would hang up, give fatal exception errors, . . .and the like. These were solved by contacting tech suppport and uninstalling the previous drivers then reinstalling the newest (non Beta driver from the matrox web site).

    All was well for a day . . .

Come Saturday the problems began again. When dual head mode was enabled the primary monitor defaulted to 256 colors and the fun began. System locks, auto reboots, illegal operations, fatal exceptions.

After some messing around I'm at least able to run one monitor.

Can anybody assist me in making this thing work?

I appreciate any and all assistance.

    TIA

Will need a little more information on your system.

First, what was your prior graphics card and were it's drivers uninstalled prior to installing the G400? Also, will need to know the motherboard, BIOS, soundcard, and what programs run at startup (some will show up in the system tray, others run quietly...sometimes...in the background)

Here's the info I could come up with:

The old video card was an ATI Expert at play. Initially the driver was not removed prior to installation of the Max. However, while talking to tech support the max driver was removed and the ATI drivers were removed.

Motherboard: (not in literature - where can I obtain this?)

          BIOS: Award

The following items are in the system tray? (bottom right of task bar):

          - Norton Anti-Virus
          - Real Juke Box
          - Norton Scheduler
          - Matrox Quick Desk
          - Bitware Fax
          - Real Player
          - Money Express

          Power Desk Driver: 5.41.008
          Graphics Bios: 1.5-22

Once again I appreciate any and all help.

              Do what Cole said.
Your G400 and NIC should not be sharing an IRQ.

                Update!!

The network card is now in IRQ 10, while the Matrox G400 is on IRQ 11. IRQ 11 is also shared by IRQ holding for PCI steering. Will this present a problem?

                What I've done thus far:

did a search for ati*.* and removed files
did a search for matrox*.* and removed files
did a search for mga*.* and removed files
did a search for g400*.* and removed files
                uninstalled any ati related applications

I've heard a murmor that Norton antivirus may complicate the installation. Is this true?

Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks for all your assistance thus far.

                Jeff

YOu could also remove that Norton Antivirus, while you're at it... Not so long ago there was a monster thread here about comp hanging without no particular reason... After ripping almost everything out of the machine and screwing around with the Bios (what resulted in 250+ messages in the thread) it turned out it was some sucky program from Gateway that kept crashing the comp...

What I'm trying to say is that it would be best if you could remove all your programs running in the background and try reinstalling drivers on a clean system... Of course, it would be best if you reinstalled Windows

The share with IRQ Holding for PCI Steeting is fine. It's suppose to be there.
