  • Strange Installation probs...

    Hello there.

I'm having a few probs with the setup i've got at the mo, and was wondering if anyone
    had any ideas.

Although these kind of things are very
    intermittent, they're getting quite annoying
now. Firstly, frequently I am getting GPFs
(and even BSODs) when attempting to install
certain software, some work OK, others don't.
For example, even installing Win98 can
cause a 'Illegal Operation' error when it's
(in this case) setting up the preferences for
    IE.
It's a case of rebooting and then letting it
start again and it works OK. This also occurs on some games (especially, it seems, those that use DX stuff, although that could be coincidence).
It's a complete mystery to me, as to why it's
occurring, and it's a bit worrying that it
occurs when INSTALLING Win98 (which implies to me a hardware problem).

    Anyone any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Sequel,

Follow these steps exactly, and in order, to ensure your setup is configured properly for you Matrox card:

Download the PD 5.30 drivers, download the 4in1 driver pack from Via, download the uninstall utility from Matrox, run the uninstall utility, reboot switch to standard Vga adapter and reboot, install the 4in1 driver pack in normal mode reboot and go into your bios and disable "read around write" save settings and exit, boot into windows and run the setup for PD 5.30, reboot and you should be up to speed.

God, Rags, I hope you're cutting and pasting that paragraph and not typing it out every single time.

          Cheers Rags,

done what you said, but I have a couple of
questions : firstly, all this is done AFTER I install Win98 (obviously ;-)), but the
errors I am getting can occur while Win98
is installing (even from a clean install),
secondly, this BIOS "read around write"
setting eluded me, the only setting I could
see was Cache Rd + CPU wt pipeline, and this
could be set to either Enabled or Disabled,
is this the setting you mean?

          Thanks in advance

            Hi Sequel,

Yes, disable that feature in your bios before you start to run the win98 setup. If you are running a clean install on a formatted system, then still get the errors, you have some basic level hardware problems, such as RAM, CPU, etc., etc... If you are installing it over itself, then you need to make sure that you uninstall your G400 drivers first. Also make sure to set your AGP aperture to 128 megs in your bios, and make sure you have the latest BIOS for you motherboard.

Are you running the VIA 4-in-1 patch?. That will help immensely with stability. This is my experience with FIC 503+ boards (MVP3 chipset)and Win98.
