  • Crash on shutdown with Win98

    Hi,

This problem started since I got my G400, and has survived through numerous re-installs of windows. I have even tried a different copy of the windows install disk to correct it. Basically, the machine runs fine, until shutdown. When I shutdown, the normal 'Windows is shutting down' message appears, and just before it is going to the 'safe to power off' screen, I get a blue screen error. Pressing enter to this blue screen causes the screen to display white vertical lines accross the display (and nothing else!)

When I power up again, I get the now very familar 'you didn't shut off the computer properly' message, and a scandisk occurs.

This is really beginning to annoy me - any ideas anyone?

    Thanks,

    Richie

Sorry, forgot to mention that I am currently using v5.30 of the drivers, I have also tried 5.25, and the problem still occurs. The new (5.41) drivers are not yet considered stable from what I have read on here (Is that right?)

    Thanks,

    Richie

Are you runing the "old" win98 or the SE version?
(The 5.41 drivers are working fine in my system!)

        goto start menu select run
        type 'msconfig'
under the advanced button deselect quick poweroff shutdown

This will solve your problem but you will have to hit the power button when the shutdown screen appears.

Blue screens at Shut down normally signify a conflict in the system somewhere, check your power management settings in the motherboard bios, advise you disable, also shutdown problems can sometimes be attributed to problem with the sound card/drivers.

Guru : I am running the 'old' version. I keep thinking maybe I should buy the next version as it might be more stable - is it?

Jaz : I am just about to shut it down for the first time since your suggestion. Oh, and I have been running with the same cpu, M/B, S/c, Memory for about a year now. The only new item is the G400. The S/C should be alright I would have thought though, as it is an original SB 16 - not even a plug and play one - it is probably the most reliable piece of hardware I have!!!

          Cheers,

I've got the old version as well, and it's standard that all options are off...

Maybe what Richie should do is enable the Scandisk feature
For then you won't have the Scandisk problem nomore ...

Well, I have one good shutdown to my name now after changing the fast shutdown setting. It doesn't matter that the machine doesn't power off - cos it never did anyway - it's a homebuilt AT format machine!

The shutdown does pause on a blank screen between the shutting down and turn off screens - weird.

              Cheers, and Happy Christmas!

There is a Win98 update at Microsoft that addresses shut down problems. I don't know if applies to your situation, but you might check it out.

Try reinstalling the via 4in1 drivers, all except busmastering(optional)
I have found that many times this can be a cure all, especially after installing new hardware, etc.
                  Good luck and Merry Christmas!
ps.I'm currently using 5.41 on AMD(Via chipset)and it works better than the rest!
                  Give it a try!

"Fast Shutdown" is a bad idea, don't feel bad having to disable it. It's just something MS made up, and makes it look like it's the HW manufaturer's fault if it doesn't happen to work. You're not missing anything.
Oh, and there isn't really any reason to get 98SE, as long as you've updated your Windows installation.
Also, I have a system similar to yours, and 5.41 drivers work well for me.

I am running the base install - I object to having to download the updates each time I reinstall my systems (which I do quite a lot to keep Windows nice and trim) If any of you know a way to update and keep the files, I would apprieciate knowing!

I think you are right saying that fast shutdown is a bad idea - just like Windows in general I think!
