  • G400MAX and AGP4x

I'm thinking to upgrade my old bx motherboard with a new ASUS P3C-E (i820) which uses AGP4x pro slot.
Will my g400max (A4) gain any extra performance, since the bandwidth is now twice as fast?

most games don't even use the agp2x and the G400 is only compatible with agp4x but it doesn't use the bandwith

As soon as the texture consumption exceeds the free local gfx-RAM, you'll see an improvement.

For example the 64MB texture rendering test in 3D Mark 2000 should give you a noticeable boost and even some of the modern games could use more textures than you could fit into your local gfx-RAM.

For example a highres texture of 2048x2048 using RGB plus an alpha channel for bumps or transparency (which the G400s are capable to handle) equals to 16 MB of uncompressed data,
now substract ~3.75 MB per buffer at 1280x1024 true color.

So using triple buffering at the above mentioned res and one single 2048x2048x32bpp texture would eat up almost all of your 32MB local gfx-RAM and all other texture would be polled via AGP.

      ...
