  • G400, AWE 64 and Dx7 probs

any one else got the G400 to work with Dx7??? I cant and its annoying, also there is a prob with sounds

I have an option in my bios about a plug and play O/S, if I set it to yes my Sound wont work, if I set it to no my graphics card wont work, any one had this prob???

lol, the best solution is probaby to trash the whole PC!

and is it me or do them little faces keep moving???

    Thanks

    Kenny!!!

Post your system specs, including motherboard, OS and version, and the version of the drivers you have loaded. This type of information always helps when trouble shooting. Initially it sounds like an IRQ conflict.

The SB AWE 64 is an ISA card, so it cannot share IRQ's with anyhting else. IMHO, it seems that the BIOS and OS are putting the sound and video cards on the same IRQ, or something similar. If you can send in your IRQ list from Device Manager (highlight Computer and click on the Properties button) that would help. If there is an IRQ conflict you should be able to change the IRQ on the sound card and test to see if that is the problem.

        Hi Kenny,

Go into your motherboard's bios and disable something called "Read around write" (or it may be something similar to that).

I have had similiar problems with a Chaintech 6ATA2 board and an AWE64 card. Although admittedly using DX6.1.

I would either get no sound, or it would stutter. Only 8-bit sounds though, 16 was unaffected.

This solved my problem, in the BIOS, chipset features I think. Where it has the IRQ assignment, change the IRQ5, DMA1 and DMA5 setting to Legacy-ISA.

Are using the VIA bus mastering drivers? These have caused me a few problems, certainly worth getting the latest versions and reading their FAQ on Windows 98.
                  http://www.viatech.com/drivers/index.htm

This is of course assuming your chaintech board has a VIA chipset.

Oh other things that seemed to affect the sound.

                  1. Using DMA0 rather than DMA1
                  2. Disabling USB support
                  3. Fully disabling any on-board sound (if you have it)

Sorry for the brain-dump but I have never fully got to grips with the problem.

                    Apologies,

If I had taken the time to read the previous emails in detail I would have seen the VIA references and the fact you had updated the drivers.

One last thing try turning the full-duplex option off in the SB16 driver. This got me windows sound but no DOS support.

                      Hi Kenny,

I had a very similar problem with my motherboard. My bios was assigning interupts to hardware in the slots which win95/98 was trying to overwrite when it loaded..

What i suggest you try is to set the plug and play aware O/S to yes, save the settings, turn your machine off, move the sound card to a different isa slot and reboot. Hopefully all ok.. (you might have to reinstall your sound drivers - i don't know).

Try leaving PNP OS to no and reserve IRQ 5 to legacy ISA in your BIOS to be sure that your AWE64 gets it.
