  • Speed improvement under Windows 98?

I am currently running under Windows 95 OSR2 with USB support. System specification.

    PIII-450
    128Mb Memory
    PC133 VIA chipset motherboard
    G400 MAX
    AWE64
    17GB UDMA-66 hard drive
    2x Philips DVD
    Philips CD-Writer

I have G400 on it's own IRQ, bus mastering on and an AGP size of 128MB. Nothing obvious running in the background.

On 3dMark 99 I am getting a 3D mark of 3387 and a synthetic CPU 3D mark of 4026. Everything is running sweetly.

I was happy till I ran 3dMark 99 on a PIII-450 machine at work using Windows 98 and although it didn't have a G400 card in it, it had a synthetic CPU 3D mark of 7098.

My question is can Windows 98 make that much difference or is it something else?

I don't really want to move unless I am reasonably sure I am going to get the benefit as everything is running so well.

First off, I'd bet that other machine had a BX chipset mobo...which is what is best at this time for PIII's. VIA is a chipset I will avoid at all costs.

But yea, 98 can make a BIG difference too. 95 does not support the 3d instructions of the PIII....and because of this, all 3d is slower, and you CANNOT use the TurboGL MCD for OGL games...

Via's Chipset, the 133 and 133a, aren't all that bad, they do have a "slower" AGP port operation.. And they do require alittle more in the way of Drivers and Patches but not because it's bad...
      It's because Windows9x wasn't developed for it...

But back to the Subject, Win98 is Night and day better than Win95 OSR2.xx, it's memory management and overall system stability are much improved.. though not perfect ... I'd say with a System like that you should either look into finding a Win98 copy or wait for Win2k or Win Millenium....

        CalCsc,
My intension here is NOT to start a benchmark war, but to show you that win98 might very well help. You should be getting far better 3dMark99 scores than you are. My VIA based Epox board, plain G400 and an AMD K6III-450 (same speed as your PIII) is getting 3dMark scores of 3850 and 7320 under Win98 SE. And I've seen better scores than mine with other K6III-450's and the newer VIA chipsets. Logically, I should be getting lower scores than your PIII, so give Win98 a try. (Although it is interesting that I'm getting better scores than either of the PIII-450's you tried. I really thought the K6's were supposed to be much slower than the PIII's.)

And if you go 98, go 98 Second Edition, not the original (or apply all the patches to the original). I had nothing but random crashes from 98's original explorer.exe, to the point where I put back on 95 OSR2's explorer.exe shell.

98's got USB support that works, and multi-monitor, and that oh-so-sweet TurboGL. :-)

            Cheers everybody,

I am waiting for a tape drive to arrive, so that I can back everything up. Then I will certainly try 98 out and post the results.

            Thanks again.

After a far from painless 98 upgrade. Here are the results.

              Windows 95 Windows98 SE
              800x600x16 800x600x16

              3D Marks
              3387 4008
              Synthetic CPU
              4026 6532

Not as good at some, but a real leap forward. Windows 98 seems to have sorted some niggly problems on my old Soundblaster as well.
