  • Just a curious question on opengl...

Why is Matrox so behind speedwise in opengl to others like Nvidia, 3dfx etc. Im not bashing Matrox Im just wondering, did matrox get a late start? Did they just drop the ball? Do the others have some advantage? I just want to understand

Up until January this year Matrox didn't have an ICD for the G200.

It was promised at the G200's release 4-6 months prior to that.

There were lots of very angry people on this board at that time

So I suppose, yes, Matrox got a late start.

      ACK!

They're not behind. With a fast PIII or Athlon, the G400 Max is every bit as fast as the TNT2 Ultra and the Voodoo3 3000, the two big boards from the G400's generation. Sometimes it's even bit faster, sometimes not. (I own all three boards, and I like all of them, but they are very different.)

The G400 likes fast CPU's. TurboGL requires a Pentium III or Athlon processor. I imagine Greebe, the proverbial Wizard of Athlon, is getting some dazzling OpenGL scores with his nuclear powered CPU.

Matrox dropped the OpenGL ball last year. No one is going to argue that. But given the right hardware and OS, the G400 is a very fast card, particularly in OpenGL.

Yes but for us lower cpu owners k6-2 and k6-3, pentium 2 and celerons, we are kinda left out in the cold. My old viper 550 agp ran opengl very fast on my k6-2 450, so I would think that matrox would cater to us as well. There are ALOT of those other cpus out there ya know

          PAULCS:

Hello, I noticed from reading your post that you own a MAX & TNT2U, I also own a TNT2U & G400 but it is not a max version just a 32mb vanilla type. My system is currently an Athlon 500 with 256mb PC100 SDRAM. What I wanted to ask you is... Do you feel the Max version is alot better performing than the vanilla? Also what is your opinion between running the TNT2U and the Max in your system?
Any comments you have will be appreciated.
          Thanks,
          Ed
