  • G400 simply amazing

Not to start another thread but I cant help it. I am simply amazed by this card. Before I got it yes I heard all the you are cpu limited the card will suck, and even if you are not cpu limited matrox cards suck and you should get a tnt2 etc. well I just ran UT with all high settings on and got 38 fps at 1024 x 768 16 bit and 36 fps at 1280 x 1024 16 bit !!! ALL I CAN SAY IS WOW! to play a game at that resolution at more than playable FPS is amazing for me I know I know all you P3 and athlon lucky people get more FPS than me but I am still a very happy camper. Way to go matrox, you were on my bad list because of the G200/socket7 probs, but now you top of my list

    K6-2 450 (not overclocked)
    128 megs pc100 sdram
G400 32 meg AGP non-max but with 5 ns ram (should I overclock?)
    8.4 gig Western Digital UDMA-33
    FIC PA-2013 rev 2.0 mobo
    AWE 64 value
    6x toshiba DVD-rom
    HP 7200i rewritable
    Win98 (not second edition)

    Hey, jediphoenix

I too just posted with a "love my new g400" thread. I have a 32meg DH, and have been using mgatweak to see how much I can squeeze out.

I took the PLL from 252 (126 chip clock,168 mem clock) to 320 (160/213) and ran stably. The result was q2 demo1.dm2 @1024x768x32, with 32bit z, went from 54 fps to 64 fps.

With crusher.dm2, there was almost no change, and all were around 25 fps, which isn't quite as playable. This is a cpu headroom issue, perhaps?

All of this was with the default sgram timings. I can adjust those slightly, but haven't pursued them yet.

Up to you whether or not to OC. I don't for desktop use, and wouldn't if I'm playing a game where i am pulling double the 30fps that most consider the playability cut off.

If I were you, I would try it. If you see no change, you know you are processor bound.

BTW, I used to have a sig almost identical to yours. I sold my K6/FIC-2013 Chip/MB a couple of months ago. Just thought I would share...

well moreau I did what you said and no change that I can see other than graphical glitches showing up on the walls in UT (cuz I did not have a fan to attach to the big ol heatsink thats on it, looks like a max heatsink) so I guess im cpu locked oh well as long as I can play 36 fps at 1280 x 1024 with all quality setting on im rocking Muhahahahahaha and to think the drivers will only get better
