  • Impressions of my new g400 32 meg=wierdness

Ok I just figured out that I am one of the lucky ones who got a now max card that has the 5ns ram on it YEAH! but i have some questions. After installing my card and making sure I had removed all drivers and registry stuff for my previous card, i installed the via 4 in 1 drivers and then the 5.30 drivers from matrox. Now here is the wierd part. I ran 3dmark99 and looked in system info, well thats wierd it showed my card as a PCI !!!! card with 32 meg of ram and says the drivers are not certified. I went into the registry hacks and ran the one for disabling vysync, but when i run 3dmark99 it always says refresh rate is 85hz. and my 17" CTX VL710 monitor is of course not listed in powerdesk, so I went and manually set the refresh rate to 128hz which i always had it at with my viper 550. ok back to the wierdness, so i then went toi the bios and changed my agp apeture from 256 to 64 and low and behold 3dmark99 now said that i had an agp card with 64 megs of memory and pcilist shows that agp 2x is now active. (with 256 apeture setting even with agp2x reg hack, agp1x was always on) so now i have that fixed and im tickled pink because busmastering and agp2x are actually working together But my problem is how do I get vsync to actually disable. I have tried the hack as i said but refresh rate always stays at 85hz. Any ideas? Jediphoenix

You may want to look at my system specs and see if there is anything there that help. I also notice the same thing concerning the AGP deal when setting mine to 256MB. At 256MB PCIList will show 1X AGP but at 128MB it will show 2X AGP. I have a CTX VL700 with VSync disable and I will check the refresh thing for you when I get home and let you know what mine says. I will also look at the PCI card readout wierdness in 3dmark99 too.

Well I fixed the Vysync problem by using matrox tweak utility instead of the reg hack. Now one more question here are my 3dmark99 scores, my viper 550 (3dmark of 3460)got way lower in all numbers except for Anisotropic Texture Filtering Speed which 3dmark99 says the g400 DOES NOT SUPPORT? and Trilinear Texture Filtering Speed which the viper 550 got more than 30fps higher than the g400. So is this a hardware or driver deficency? And will it be fixed? Jediphoenix Here are my numbers:

G400 does "minimizing" anistropic, but not maximizing, so 3DMark just says it doesn't at all.

Ans TNT cards trilinear filtering is not real triliniear. They use some "trick" to pull it off. (there were several articles about it on the net a few months ago...details are not on the tip of my brain). G400s trilinear is true triliniear, therefore slower than the fudged filtering TNT uses.

Should I overclock the card since im lucky it has the 5ns ram? If so what should I use and what settings? Thx Jediphoenix BTW contrary to what I have read here, Quake 3 looks awesome on my system, runs fast and that is with all high quality settings on and 1024 x 768 GO AMD AND MATROX!!

Looks like you already figured out the VSync deal, but what about the PCI card wierdness? On mine it just list it as a 'Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead-English'.

well when i started 3dmark99 and then went to system information it showed the bus as PCI and available texture memory as 32megs but when i changed apeture size to 64 megs it showed bus as AGP and available textures as 64 megs, so all is well

With my AGP aperture set to 128MB mine shows the following.

Total Video Memory On Card: 32,697KB
                Total Texture Memory: 92,089KB
                Bus: AGP
