  • Messing with IRQ settings = bizzare slowdown

After reading all this IRQ business I decided to try and get my MX300 off my G400 IRQ. I could not for any amount of trying get the MX300 to stop sharing the G400 IRQ. Anyway I give up and fire up Q3Demo and low and behold I have lost my luscious smooth frame rates that I had through to 1280x1024. Now I have 20fps 1024x768x32 (max textures etc). All my IRQ's are back to origional settings! What up?

NB Since incident I have done full uninst of drivers and reload of 5.30 and reinstalled DX7

Just restored my registry and everything is back to normal (no hardware resources changed)?

        CMB,
If you are using Win 98, you can use SCANREG.

        1) Boot up holding the CTRL key down until the safe mode menu comes on.
        2) Choose the regular "command prompt only" - not the safe mode version.
        3) at the c: prompt type: scanreg /restore and press enter
        4) choose the most recent registry from the list that started normally and press enter.
        5) Press enter again when prompted to confirm
        6) wait for your computer to restart itself.

This only works well if you haven't loaded any new programs since the registry selection you made. If you added or deleted programs, it could confuse Windows.

I have the same bad fps problem in 32 bit color with UT. I have scrambled to find an answer and can only attribute it to poor texture management with the UT engine(everything is set fine in my BIOS and no IRQ sharing). I think you need at least 32mb video ram to run that game in 32 bit color. I only have 16mb ram on my g400. 16 bit performance is fine, but the second I bump it to 32 bit I drop frames big time. All other games work fine for me in 32 bit color. My system has more than enough power to handle any game. Also, everyone who posts that UT runs well with 32 bit on their system has 32MB G400s.
            I haven't tried Quake 3 yet.

            My system
            ABIT Bh6 MB
            Pentium III 500mhz
            192 MB PC100 RAM
            13.5 GB IBM Deskstar HDD
            4.3 GB Seagate HDD

Warlic, if people with 32megs G400's are saying that UT runs fast in 32bit and 16megs G400 owners say that UT doesn't run fast in 32bit, maybe there could also be some problems with drivers texture management because the drivers do the texture shuffling for the card.

I just installed an Intel 820 mobo - here are the results:-
-No more IRQ sharing with AGP (MX 300 replaced by onboard SB PCI 128)
-Not a sinlge FPS change in Q3 benchmarks.
-Final reality AGP speed test for 16Mb down from 116 to 93 (44 for 36Mb)

All drivers reinstalled using appropriate uninstall methods first.
Set CDrom drives autoinsert notification off - has small but noticeable effect.

                Current config:- Intel CC820, 256MB, SB PCI 128, 2940UW, Fasttrak Raid with striped 2xBarracuda 13Mb HD's, Dlink 10/100 NIC, Pioneer DVD 6x.
                PIII 500, 256Mb, Soyo 6BA, FastTrak66 IDE Raid (Seagate Barras'), AHA 2940UW (IBM UW's), MX300.
