  • Question on fillrate of g400 vs g400 max

    I've got a question for those out there that may be able to answer it. I just bought a g400 32mb dual head OEM card and things are running very smoothly. The question I have is regarding the fill rate of the card. I read somewhere that the standard 32mb g400 has a fill rate of some 250MP, while the g400 max has a rate fill rate of some 333MP. I managed to overclock my card with the mga tweak utility to 145 core and 195 memory(approximate). Very similar specs to that of the max. Anyhow I benched my system before and after on 3dmark99 and it gave me a fill rate of 247 both times…not the exact numbers however but within 1-2 points. Has anyone been able to duplicate this situation, and does anyone know what this is the case? Not that I am complaining or anything, but I just like to maximize the bang for my buck

    You will never get what they print. those are maximum theoretical values, not real world sustained figures. At 145mhz core you would get a theoretical maximum fill rate of 290mpix

      When does the Spec of the PC become limiting?
      When will increasing the spec of the machine start to have no effect?

      - sorry with a G400, say 256Mb PC100 RAM

        Realize that the Max has the SGRAM instead of SDRAM...so it will be a git more efficient, also...but, other than that, as far as I know...Max max is just one of the faster chips from the manufacturing process...don't know if you know this, but I used to be an Engineer making Chips...
        They manufacture the chips then sort them for whichever value they are looking for, in the case of the G400 chip, Mhz speed..
        the slower chips are probably the 16 Meggerz, the mid ones the 32, single, then dual, then the Max.

          All retail G400s use SGRAM. The difference is the MAX's is 5ns, and the vanillas are 6ns.

          To see the real difference in performance between standard clocking and MAX or overclocking, you need to go to a resolution >1024x768. The cards perform almost identically up to that point in most tests, then the MAX starts to show it's muscle....

            When running both Max and Non max Cards on my setup 3dMark99 scored virtually no difference. I dont know whether thats due to the CPU not being quick enough.

            3DMARK99 800x600 = 3217
            Primary System: Athlon 850, 128MB PC133 Ram, GeForce GTS 32DDR, Abit KA7 MoBo, AWE64 Gold, 2940AU Scsi with 32x Reader and 4x4x16 Writer, Jaz and Zip, Card Cooler.

            Seconday System: P3 @ 560
            Tertiary System: Celeron 400
