  • Big time problem, please help!

I bought the G400 10 days ago and I haven't been able to make it work since then.

The demo isn't even working. I get to the menu, click start and it comes back to the menu. Sometimes it takes me back to the desktop.

Same thing for my games: NHL 2000 doesn't work at all. Again I can get to the menu, but when the game is about to start it crashes and I'm back to the desktop.

I tried adjusting the bios aperture size to 128 and it didn't change a thing!

    My system is:
    P-III 500 Mhz
    128 Mb Ram
    Mother board: Gigabyte GA-6VXE
17" Viewpoint Monitor (like it matters?)

I really need some help here, thanks!

      Thanks for your time DuRaNgO...

Here's what you asked...I'm not very experimented with these drivers and Bios things so if something I wrote is wrong let me know:

      - I now have drivers version 4.11 for tge G400 but I also used version 5.30 and it didn't work.

      - DX7

      - I used to have a Guollemot Voodoo Banshee on my old PC but I got the Matrox with this new PC.

      - Bios 1.3 (not sure if I got that right).

      IRQ3-COM2-PRIMARY
      IRQ4-COM1-PRIMARY
      IRQ5-LPT2-PRIMARY
      IRQ6-FLOPPY-PRIMARY
      IRQ7-LPT1-PRIMARY
      IRQ8-RTC ALARM-DISABLED
      IRQ9-IRQ2 REDIR-SECONDARY
      IRQ10-RESERVED-SECONDARY
      IRQ11-RESERVED-SECONDARY
      IRQ12-PS/2 MOUSE-PRIMARY
      IRQ13-COPROCESSOR-PRIMARY
      IRQ14-HARD DISK-PRIMARY
      IRQ15-RESERVED-DISABLED

I also used the MGATweak but didn't know what to turn on or off...

      Thanks for your help!

Go into your bios and enable "assign IRQ for VGA", this should allow the G400 to take an IRQ.

Btw, has anyone ever seen a P3-system without any IRQ holders for PCI-steering??

          This is my first...

Do you have your desktop set to either 16 or 32-bit colour?

You say you have both the 4.11 & 5.30 and have tried them both. Man.. be SURE you get the old drivers out (Matrox site has DETAILED
instrucions you can print out). I had major BSOD when I went from whatever was on the 400
disk to the 5.30. Of course, I didn't clean the old drivers first. And get direct X7 too.
These things helped me, but I make no claim to be an expert, nor that these things will work for you.

Do what Rags said first and foremost.
Your IRQ list does not show an IRQ for the G400. It needs one.

Go to Programs, accessories, system tools, system information and select hardware resources. Then select IRQ's. Copy and paste what you find there in this thread, that should help us help you better.

Rags: I already enabled "assigned IRQ for VGA"... still doesn't work.

Ant: my desktop is set to 32-bit color.

JWilliams: I formatted my hard disk the last time I installed driver 4.11. Should I uninstall 4.11 and install 5.30 (I read Matrox instructions...doesn't their uninstall program do the same thing?).

Thanks again guys, Ihope you come with other suggestions!

I am glad you posted that list, the thing that jumps out at me is the VIA CHIPSET listings. You are using a VIA chipset, which needs the VIA drivers go to VIA's website and download the latest and install them then get back to us.

Ok, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with your IRQ's. Everything looks fine there. Go into your bios and set the AGP Aperature to 128megs or 256megs. I have mine set to 256 even though I only have 128megs of ram. Another thing is that if you are using DX7 you should use the 5.30 drivers as they support it. Make sure you do what Rags said and get the 4 in 1 drivers from Via for your motherboard. This is absolutely crucial, I couldn't get my card to work properly without them. You should also go to Murc's download/utilities page and get the registry hacks for PD5.x. Use these reg hacks when you extract them:
                        ForceAGP1x.reg
                        VsyncDisable.reg

                        I hope this helps.

                          Cmag & Rags...

I am downlaoding the 4 in 1 via drivers right now...

Cmag, are you sure you want me to force AGP1X and not AGP2x?? Because I think I'm alrady in 1x...

I would try 2X first, if it gives you problems, then back down to 1X.
