  • AMD K6-III 500+ ?

I'm wondering if AMD plan to release 500MHz or faster versions of the K6-III. I think it's strange they continue releasing faster K6-2's rather than K6-3's. Do you consider a K6-III/G400 as a good solutions?

The last I have heard, according to www.amdzone.com , is that AMD is planning on releasing the K6-3/500 in mid December. It is also suppose to be a .18 micron design.

If you already have a mobo capable of supporting the k6-3,and you just wish to upgrade the cpu and video, the k6-3 500mhz,definitely has the power to do the g400 justice.
However if you plan to build a new system,a better approach, would be The Athlon or pentium III's

        One hang-up:
If there is a .18 micron K6 product, it will probably run at a lower voltage (say, 1.8V), than most SS7 boards are ready to offer (most don't go below 2.0v).

My new Epox MVP3G5 has settings for 1.8 in the manual and it looks like it could go as low as 1.6 volts if I figured the switch settings sequence correctly. From this, I'm guessing that 1.8 is a real possibility for the K6-2orIII-500. I'm ready. I'll just move my K6III-450 to my old FIC503+. But you are right, most older boards don't go below 2.0v, so lets hope AMD decides to use that as the new standard for .18.

But you will want a new mobo for a 500. I was amazed how much faster the new Epox is than the old FIC, particularly the hard drive. HDtach scores went from 8 meg per second to over 15 with an ATA66 drive and Windows loads twice as fast.

From what I've been hearing on the www.amdzone.com site, the K6-3 500 (and higher) will start to be available december/january at .18 micron. As for voltage, I don't know what it will be, but 1.8 seems more likely than 2.0 unless they increase the cache to 512k, which I hear is a possibility. Several Epox boards (MVP3G series) has 1.8v support already. Also, there is the K6-2+ coming out at .18 micron with 128k of full speed L2 cache (like intel's celery chip). Rumors abound, but other cache sizes look likely at 256k and 512k for the K6-3.

              Yep,
That guy over on AmdZone usually knows what's going on. I'm not looking at anymore SS7 systems though. I'm hoping to go Athlon shopping once the new Via chipsets come out.

                  Hey Rab

Got that epox board and running ok then? I've now got a shiny new 66 HDD sat on my desk that's going to get hooked up tonight.

Rab - that increase is in HD happened for me by using the via drivers instead of w98's that everyone praises (for stability). I'm getting burst 24MBps instead of 9MBps and cpu went from 99% to 4%. Did you try your k63 @ 500?

I tried it at 500, but I have a 2.4 volt version and it didn't work that well. I had to use 2.7 volts and I had to run CAS at 3 instead of 2. Subjectively, I couldn't tell any difference, I guess because of the CAS 3, so I just left it at 450. Couldn't get 112 mhz FSB to work either. Maybe better memory would help.

Tonight I was getting 21.4 MBps and 4.9% utilization so you have me beat. I guess its the Tyan. I have the same VIA 4in1's on my 503+/K62-350 and only get 8MBps and 96%, so I think the newer boards coupled with the K6-III's extra cache are making things faster - not the VIA drivers.

The other thing I found was that your HDD is fastest if you put the HDD and DVD\CD on the same cable. With them on separate cables on separate IDE channels I was getting about 35% less read speed.

I've heard rumours of 600-800MHZ versions coming out pretty soon. (that would be Q4'99-Q1'00)
I can't remember where I read that so don't take it for granted.

Thanks for the info. I'm currently using AOpen AX59pro so a core voltage of 1.8 is no problem - I guess I go for a K6-III / G400 combo. Of course I would like an Athlon solution, but I guess I can't afford that

It would be cool if they released 600-800 versions as well!
